Right now I am in the process of replaying GTA 5, which is why I haven't been on TW a whole hell of a lot...

I have said it before and I will say it again; Grand Theft Auto got me through the last few months of middle school, and all of my freshman and sophomore years of high school!

I was sort of introduced to Grand Theft Auto in 2000, though I would not play it for the first time until January or February of 2003. It was my 11th birthday and we were living in Virginia Beach. A bunch of family on my mom's side (Grandma, aunt, uncle, two cousins) drove down from Northern Virginia. For whatever reason, there hadn't been time for my relatives to buy me presents, so we went to dinner and then hit Toys R Us. I'd been the proud owner of a PlayStation for about three months, and my older cousin said I should get Grand Theft Auto. I distinctly remember looking at this picture on the jewel case in the toy store that night, which means it was GTA 2, which had just been released in October 1999.

GTA 2, unlike the newer games, was rated "T" for Teen; I had a couple of T-rated games in my collection by then, and my mom didn't outright refuse to buy me GTA 2, but she talked me out of it and bought me another game I'd been wanting (that I can't remember since this was 20 years ago). I am glad that I did not buy GTA 2, because this was the last of the "2D" games with incredibly shitty graphics; I did rent GTA 2 at Blockbuster in probably 2003 or 2004, just for grins, and found it to be enjoyable at first. However, shitty graphics not withstanding, I got bored with the game; I returned it to Blockbuster and haven't played it since...

My favorite part of the whole game was the ability to make the main character burp and fart just by pressing a button on the controller!

The GTA most of us know and love came out in late 2001, in the form of Grand Theft Auto III. My parents bought me a PS2 for Christmas about two months after it came out, but I can tell you right now that my mom never would have let me have that game back then! I effectively missed out on GTA 3, not being introduced to the "3D Universe" GTA games until Vice City in early 2003; Vice City came out about a year after GTA 3, in November 2002 if I remember correctly. My Uncle Jeff, the awesome guy who refinished my wheels skins, got Vice City on PS2 for Christmas in December 2002. He let my cousins, daughters ages 13 and 10 at the time, play it; The older cousin told me over the phone how fun Vice City was. Uncle Jeff and family came to visit in January 2003 and he brought Vice City with him. My mom did not want me to play it, and in typical Aspie fashion, I threw a fit. My uncle had no problem with me playing it, but while he's always been the "cool" uncle, he knew better than to sidestep my parents...

My dad has always been more chill about letting me do things than my mom, and if I remember correctly my dad persuaded my mom to let me play Vice City; There was one cheat code my uncle wouldn't let me see and he made me go downstairs while he showed my dad; I'm guessing it had something to do with hookers...

After that, we all gathered around the TV, and my cousins and I took turns playing Vice City while the adults watched; We stayed up until well past midnight! Needless to say, I was hooked! When I first started playing Vice City, all I'd do was jack cars and drive around listening to the awesome in-game soundtrack.

My mom allowed my dad to buy Vice City for my 14th birthday, on the condition that it was "for him" and all I'd be doing was stealing cars and driving around; At first this was the case, but it very quickly went out the window, because I didn't even make it through the summer of '03 before I started playing the violent missions. Vice City helped me vent my frustrations about getting bullied during the last few months of eighth grade, and I think this is why my mom started to look the other way.

My cousin and I bonded over Vice City on PS2 and The Sims on PC; Those two games were all we played when were at my house, and obviously I couldn't bring the desktop PC over to his house so we primarily played Vice City over there...

My aunt was even more strict about what my cousin was allowed to watch (and play) than my mom was with me, but eventually she gave up and let us do as we pleased.

My cousin and I played Vice City regularly for about a year and a half, and then San Andreas was announced. The third installment in the "3D Universe" was released on the PS2 right before Halloween, and I rented it at Blockbuster almost immediately; My mom took me to Blockbuster but had to go to the grocery store first...

She gave me money and I went into the video store on my own; If I remember correctly, I'd had to wait several days to rent it because it was so popular, and I was convinced that every copy would be rented out in short order. The plan was to rent a copy and go meet my mom at the car. The problem is that I was a 15-year old kid and looked every bit my age...

The clerk was this foreign woman who initially refused to let me rent the M-rated San Andreas, but I turned on the charm and told the truth; I said that my mom was shopping at Giant, and had given me permission to rent the game. I had cash in hand, as opposed to a credit card, which I think played a major role in things working out in my favor.

I rented the game, and of course I loved it when I played it for the first time; I put it on my Christmas list, and my Grandparents bought it for me.

San Andreas was superior to Vice City in terms of graphics and the size of the world you got to play in, among other things, and my cousin and I pretty much stopped playing Vice City even though I hadn't beaten it yet. As I said before, my San Andreas game was one of the originals, so it had the "Hot Coffee" mod; I never did the "Hot Coffee" minigames, but I found later on that my game was totally worthless when I tried to sell it later on. My copy of San Andreas was also incredibly glitchy, and beginning in about July 2005, it developed this annoying habit of starting over from the beginning; Looking back on it, I believe this is due to my excessive use of cheat codes.

The graphics in Vice City and San Andreas are not bad generally speaking, but the people are horribly animated compared to the "HD Universe games".

    Nine years of progress...

This is the Imponte Phoenix, a car obviously based on the Pontiac Firebird/Trans Am; It is not present in any of the games that take place in Liberty City (GTA III, Liberty City Stories, and IV). The car graphics in San Andreas were superior to Vice City's in my opinion; The car below is from San Andreas (The game was released in 2004 and takes place in 1992)...

This is the GTA 5 version (games was released in 2013 and takes place in 2013 as well)...

I was watching some gameplay videos of San Andreas, and I still can't believe how crude some of the graphics are!

I bought the GTA 5 on PS4 at least a year ago but didn't start playing it until last week; I promptly got a bit reckless with my spending after beating the first major "heist" mission...

I did my research and found all the tricks to becoming a billionaire within the game, so after making it through about 40% of the missions in three days or so, I started from scratch and I believe I'm just shy of 30% completion right now after another three days; Beating the game is going to take a lot longer if I want to it just right!

That was only in the first GTA, which I've never played, and looks like a 1970s Atari game compared to GTA 5!

    @El Duderino

This was one of my favorites in Vice City; The Rancher, which resembles a roughly 1981-1986 K5 Blazer! I say 1981-1986 because Vice City takes place in 1986...
