Yeah man, those stripper discs can't take down metal, use them to blend after you take whatever down with a flap disc

 

I use 3" rollock's with my 90' wiz wheel, 80 grit and it's okay. I normally take down weld with a grind wheel and smooth it out with some heavy 3M buffer disk. Can you post a part number or pic of the purple. I may have something entirely different.

I use these. I also use them for mill scale. Depends how thick the mill scale is, but it works for me most of the time. And very good for stripping paint and rust. I like using them because they don't take off much metal.

You ever buy at Shapiro in STL? That is where I got all my stuff for projects. I don’t know if Metal supermarket is cheaper or not

 

Yup, that's what I got. That thing is hard as a rock, maybe harder. I'll try it out again. Hope results are different..

What do you guys use to take off mill scale? Hot rolled sheets from my local supplier always seem to have really strong mill scale on them. Tubing always cleans up super easy tho

UPS delivered my muffler to the wrong house this week. But I finally tracked it down. And tomorrow is supposed to be sunny finally!



Although it turns out my tools leave a lot to be desired for exhaust work... tonight's practice weld went a lot better than I thought it would... no holes!

I never heard of that, it sounds awesome. Where do you get it?

I am going through like 1 or 2 flap wheels just to strip mill scale off the hot rolled stock I got last month...per 8 foot stick of angle.




Edited to add: does anyone know an easy way to get these god damn labels off the exhaust couplers?

 

To take off the sticker residue? I use lacquer thinner sometimes to kinda melt it down and wipe off.

 

I’ve never seen p&o angle iron. But with the exception of structural steel erection at work I’ve probably only used angle iron once in the last 3-4 years so I’m not too well versed in what kind of options you have when buying it. The only thing I buy in p&o is sheets of 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 plate. I get it from IMS where I get the rest of my metal.

 

I can`t say about the prices as all the places I deal with charge a nice penalty for cut material unless it is a drop .

Then it is just easier to buy in the full length it all gets used .

Back in the nineties it was not uncommon to have a $500.00 minimum order.

 

Mill scale just makes for shit welds but still conducts fine right? Like if I built a table out of a sheet with scale, would I need to strip the entire table to get a solid ground? I typically put the clamp right on whatever I am working on but I was hoping for easy tacking I can ground through the table.

 

You can leave it on there. It’ll do fine, at least in my experience.

 

I've never had an issue with mill scale. I have more trouble getting rid of the mill oil so I can get paint to stick.

 

You should be fine. But mill scale is less conducive than steel and not actually part of the metal. It sits on top of the metal, that’s why it flakes off when bend it.

 

You want where your Weld project sits and where the Work Clamp sits to be clean

Unless your welder has enough extra voltage a poor work connection can be compensated for.

I’ve never done it, mostly cause I don’t have the need, but I’ve heard a lot of guys having good success with chemically removing the mill scale. Without knowing exactly what it entails I couldn’t say if it would be feasible to do with a larger part.
