Anyone running a smittybilt XL tent on a short bed? Looking for ideas how I could mount it because it’s longer than the bed. I figured there would be at least a few guys running it.

I haven't ordered my tent or rack yet but I need a tent that can fit a family of 3 and a dog.(wife, 8 year old son,40lbs dog).

would a cab high rack allow the tent to mount forward a little above the roof without a roof rack? Ugh I wish a smaller tent would work but I need one of the bigger ones.

Not familiar with the tents but I’ve seen their bolt on accessories like bumpers rot off vehicles just after the warranty expired.

I have the Tepui version of this. It's a big bitch. It sticks about 12" past the front of my bed rack (so about 8" hanging over the cab). And about the same in the back. Honestly, I wish I had a smaller tent too, but I have a family of 4. If I were you, I'd get the smaller tent and make the dog sleep in the bed of the truck. I'm pretty close to doing that with my kids.

This is my XL on my Long Bed, if you got one it would either hang off the back. Or be over the roof a little.

What rack do you have? This is making me consider a cab height rack so that was the tent can overhang the cab and not sticking out the back

Yup. A short bed is 14” shorter. You have a probably good amount of overhang already. Imagine another 7” on each side. My tent is slightly warped on the part that overhangs.

yes yes. I think Im going to keep looking at options and make a decision on what rack and tent I want. I may go with a smaller tent and use an annex. I really wanted to figure out a way to run the XL on my shortbed without it looking rediculous

Running smitty RTT XL on victory 4x4 bed rack myself. I have a roof rack also but the bed rack isn't high enough to let the RTT hang over the cab, so hanging off the back was the only option. So I mounted it sideways ladder comes off the back and provides a cover for tailgate camp stove kitchen etc. I did not like it hanging off the back at all plus it made rig to long to garage. Tent hangs over sides but is flush with mirrors. Front to back fit is perfect and attractive. I really enjoy sideways mount and RTT overhanging sides keeps items in bed dry while camping too.

what did you use to mount the tent to the bed rack rails? The provided brackets were too short and the bolts were also too short.
