Test drive both. If you are getting 2wd the tech upgrades are what you need to consider if they are worth it. If you are getting 4wd you get tech plus rear locker. Only you can say if it's worth it (how much off road/difficulty do you plan for).

SR is a good truck. Go for it.

I have a 2017 SR and really like it. Most things you can upgrade yourself cheaper or to better quality like intermittent wipers, fog lights, heated seats, head unit, sound system, suspension, wheels, tires, roof racks, leather seat covers. You can do what really matters to you.

The biggest thing that the off-road offers is the locker and off-road features like crawl control. In my opinion you only really need those if you’re planning some serious offroading, and in that case do you really want to be doing it in a brand new truck?

Edit: take a look at the SX package.

Please note that RWD TRD Off Roads have a Rear Locker and are one of the best 2WD Tacomas to get if you're going that route.

This train of thought is exactly what lead me to the SR. Seat covers, speakers, suspension, etc are all things easily upgraded later when budget allows. The locker is the only big ticket thing for the TRD OR in my opinion, and that can also be added (at some considerable expense, mind you).

I absolutely agree that the SX package is the best bang for your buck, but you gotta want an Access Cab, because that's the only way to get it and probably why a lot of people don't even realize it exists.

Only thing Aftermarket in this picture are the tires and the shell.

Another train of thought, you can get much more truck, used.

Good point! I forgot 2wd has the rear locker. That's a nice feature for sure.

If you really want the off road you will probably regret not getting one then. That said, I really like my SR with the SX pkg, the keyless entry and intermittent wipers were included in the 2020, but even if they weren't it's not expensive to add them. Got the dealer to throw in the running boards/mudflaps, I upgraded the tires and added the foglights.

Bought a used 2018 SR in July for the same reasons mentioned. I paid $24,400 for it and it had 25k miles. I compared it to similar used TRD Off Roads that were available and 2nd Gens. The second gens were over $20K with 80-100k miles and rusty and abused. The off-roads were all in the $30k range for similar mileage.

I spent at the very least $5k less on the truck vs an Off-Road 3rd GEN

I don't have much in the way of off-roading in my area (midwest) but I would be doing some truck camping so I didn't see the need for crawl or a locker.
I mod all my vehicles and knew I'd be swapping wheels, suspension, adding leather etc. I added keyless, tint, fogs and plan to add intermittent wipers which are really the only 'features' of a higher model I would miss...oh and floor mats. Plus I added the Off-Road dash trim pieces as I like the gun metal color over the black. I spent under $1000 on those items. I do plan to add fender flares which will be another $3-400

The only thing I wish was different is the color. I love black vehicles when they're clean but that only lasts for about 5 minutes. The paint shows every flaw.

    Here's the 2018 SR V6 4x4

That’s a bad ass truck! Thanks for sharing. I found a white one I may go and look at, the reason I’m asking, I love the off road. But gawd the prices!

I bought the 18 taco sr utility package and no regrets. I rarely carry passengers so it’s perfect for me.

Heres the one before I put in the fogs. V6 4WD, probably cost 8 to 10 K less than the trd or, depending on what package.
