The graphics and gameplay of today are lightyears ahead of Atari.

For Christmas almost twenty years ago, my Uncle Kenny bought me a huge book called 100 Years of the American Auto. I LOVED that book; I literally loved it to pieces, and within five or six years it was being held together with duct tape! I got it in 2000, and before the decade was over, it was falling apart and missing a page or two. Today, I bought myself a new copy on Amazon...

I could not agree more, it was a huge mistake for him to have bought it in the first place!

I just remembered something totally random...

In the summer of 1997, I went to day camp at my elementary school (Landels, in Mountain View, California); I just suddenly remembered that one of the camp counselors drove a white Ford Pinto. I say again that this was in 1997, so the car would have been at least seventeen years old. The newest first gen Tacos are now sixteen years old, but we're talking about a Pinto here; There's really no comparison between a Toyota product, and a hatchback with a habit of spontaneously combusting when rear-ended...

The point I'm trying to make is that even almost a quarter of a century ago, a Pinto was not something you regularly saw being used as a daily driver! The counselor's name was Pat, and I'm guessing he was somewhere in the range of 21-25 years of age. He could have been in his late teens, but I don't remember; He definitely did not look like a teenager. The minimum age to get a driver's license in California has always been sixteen; My cousin who still lives there got her learner's permit in late 1995 or early 1996, when she was 15½; Now she's almost 40!

That means that Pat the Pinto owner was at least sixteen, but again he did not look sixteen, and I don't think they'd be allowing someone under eighteen to help run a day camp for eight-year olds. There was also a woman, roughly the same age, who worked alongside Pat; I'm guessing both of Pat and the female counselor were at least old enough to drink...

The Pinto was produced from 1971 to 1980, and for some reason I remember Pat saying his was a 1974 model; If this was the case, then that car may very well have been exempt from smog testing! Nowadays, all vehicles older than 1976 are exempt from smog testing in California; I have no idea if it was the same in 1997. Pat's car was the original hatchback version, and like I said it was white; It also was not a junker by any means. The car was immaculate as far as I could tell, and the fact that this was in Northern California probably had something to do with this; Vehicles from California tend to not rust! It probably spent its whole life there.

Pat had personalized license plates on his Pinto that said 4PAT (I can remember him pointing this out to me); At only eight years old, I knew what a Ford Pinto was, but I can remember having a hard time believing that he drove one! I also remember Pat telling me that the car was a gift from his parents or something (hence the vanity plates); Likely, this Pinto belonged to an elderly neighbor or relative and had supremely low miles for such an old car, and his parents probably got it for next to nothing.

I vaguely remember Pat telling me that his Pinto had air-conditioning; I do not remember if it was manual or automatic. Pat was incredibly proud of that car! Since the car was old enough to be exempt from smog, I suppose there's a possibility of it still being on the road, but I kind of doubt it...

I don't even see Pintos at car shows anymore!

My mom's first brand new car was a white 1985 Ford Escort hatchback, stick shift with no air-conditioning...

My mom found some paperwork with the VIN on it, and I ran the VIN on Carfax; My parents sold that car in either 1989 or 1990, before moving from California to Pennsylvania. The Carfax report shows that it spent the remainder of its life in California; It failed a smog test in Truckee (near Tahoe I think), and the trail goes cold after...

My mom very quickly regretted not getting A/C!

My first brand new car was a 1988 VW Golf, I paid $7990 for it and it had no AC either.

Cash or finance? My mom's paperwork showed that with interest rates the way they were back then, she ended up paying almost ten grand for a $5-6K car when all was said and done!

I have a feeling he is going to try to get something else and I see the situation getting worse as he wants a truck that can pull 10,000 pounds so he can haul that stupid camper around.
