Yes you can do that. My extension cord is a mix of receptacles similar to that. I used 10ga extension cord which is good for 30A, but I have also used 12ga with no issue because my welder doesn't pull that much current in 240V anyway.

Yeah, you would just cut off that male side and install the new plug that fits your dryer receptacle. I'll try find the company that makes a cord already made for that dryer receptacle.

Check Lowes. You can buy 3/10 wire by the foot for a lot less than that and all you’d need to do is get the right plug ends. That’s what I did when I built my own experience cord and was all-in under $30 for a 30 foot extension.

I bought that cord.
Very heavy, works good. I leave it plugged in all the time as the outlet is buried behind a trailer. That's probably why the little light that shows it has power burned out. Otherwise, works perfect.

I'd consider an adapter. One of the reasons why I bought that cord rather than make my own is the nice, molded-in, "solid" ends.
That said, my plasma cutter came with a different plug and since that plug was assembled, I disassembled it and put the correct one on.
I did try to buy an adapter first from Amazon but received some weird keychain thing

 

Yeah those are nice. I just want as few contact points as I can which I was wanting to swap the plug. Rather than adapter > extension cord > welder it'd just be extension cord > welder. Plus it's a little cheaper.

 

Does it matter which wire goes where regarding the two hots when wiring in the new connector? I know dick about AC.

There's a diagram on with the plug/receptacle, GREEN screw is Ground for the green wire.

So the down side of those 3 pin dryer cords is they don't have a ground. Its just L1, L2 and Neutral. If you go across L1 and L2 you get 240V, if you go L1/L2 to Neutral, you get 120. Its not great for safety, which is why the new 4 wire plugs exist.

The best way would be to get the landlord to upgrade to a 4 pin plug, and then get one of the extension cables other people posted.

 

It really works pretty good. I used it for my camshaft lamp. I found that the key to making it go fast was to minimize the distance between anode and cathode to get the most current flowing (but also, don't let them touch...)

Just put the longer input cord on the welder and be done.

No reason for an extension cord unless you need it for another piece of equipment.

The less connections the better .

You can install a input cord on any welder!!

 

I guess it depends where you live many places don`t have a 4 wire service.

I grew up with tube and knob

My dryer has the two hots and a ground .

Then the neutral and ground are on the same bar in the Box

 

Those 4 post plugs are for stoves and dryers that need a dedicated 120 volt for the oven/dryer light.

If you use the same plug for your welder, you just wont have any wire going to the 4th post in the plug.

Like Craig said, skip the extension cord. Make a long input cord for the welder. Both of my welders have 25' input cords.
