    You don't need anything besides your truck to drive down ta dirt road.

    You said you don't believe shocks fade driving down normal dirt roads. Given speed and duration, they do.

    You are misquoting me. I said that I have never detected it.

    CAVEAT: not every dirt road is the same. The vast majority of the ones where I grew up are used for general transportation in farm country. They are well maintained. We also have what are labeled “minimum maintenance” dirt roads and those can be quite different, but I’ve driven a lot of those at high speed in rust bucket pickups without worrying about my shocks failing.

    Speaking of dirt bikes and because I feel like I can post whatever I want in a thread I stated about suspension travel but that got invaded by people that want to argue about the merits of race shocks, here’s my 1985 KDX 200 fresh off the trail and loaded into my 2016 SR5.

    That shock reservoir and uni-link suspension were the shit back then.

    And wow, look at those air cooling fins!

    Bottom line, you were mentioning the difference. All I was getting at is the average driver can indeed have issues with shock fade, and that an aftermarket shock provides better handling over events, which can lead to shock fade.

    That is all.

    I can't dispute their n=1 experience, but I can report on my n=1 experience that I have driven 1000's of miles on dirt roads in Minnesota over many years and I have never had a stock shock fail to preform to my satisfaction; nor have I had anyone tell me a story of a shock failure while driving down a dirt road in Minnesota. In their case, the 100F+ heat might have caused a bit more stress than is typical in my hood (not that we never reach that temp). Also, the road they were on did not look like a typical dirt road around here. That looked more like a minimum maintenance road out in a wilderness area. I am only bringing this up as full disclosure about possible differences in the stress level.

    Tangentially related,
    I was watching a youtube video and these Aussies were saying that, in their opinion, the expense of setting up a long travel system on an IFS vehicle isnt worth it to them for the small gains you get in wheel travel. I just thought it was an interesting perspective.
