Correct, 3rd gen is computer controlled.
2nd gen have a voltage sensing wire

 

My optima is acting weird. A few months ago it went dead after sitting in the truck with the headlights on for maybe 15 minutes. I pulled it and put it on a 6A charger then put it back in the truck. It's been fine from then until today when I had the stereo on while working on a roof. Went dead way too soon.
It may be that this stupidly expensive optima that I didn't want in the first place is already going bad or I thought it may just need a bit more voltage to charge properly.

 

Sadly optima is not as good as they used to be. I’m runing them and wound not buy another one when these die.
ever since optima moved there factory from aurora to Mexico the quality has dropped. I’ve got a blue top that was made in Aurora and is still going strong, it’s 10+ years old.

First it was a govt contract that caused production issues. Then it was a move. I've been hearing these claims since the early 2000s. It could still be under warranty go swap it??? What parasitic drain do you have going on ?

 

Either a OBS ford or a house lol. Love that car but can’t justify keeping something in the garage 300+ days per year. Getting a truck that has road manners and can carry crap for work would be more useful for me these days
