This last Thursday I had a brand new Toyota 5 speed transmission put in my truck. The clutch was replaced in November. To me it feels hard to shift as in not a smooth change between gears mostly between 1st through third gear and a little better going to 4th and 5th. Is there a break in period on a new transmission where it takes a few miles to smooth out? I am wanting to teach a family member how to drive a manual transmission but I'm not sure this is the truck to learn on. The clutch feels fine it just really feels like you have to pull it into gear harder than normal.

Could be that the clutch isn't fully disengaging. Was anything changed with the clutch slave and master cylinders?

The shop that replaced it put in a new Luk clutch and flywheel but I don't think the clutch slave or master cylinder was done.

If the cylinders were untouched, and it was okay before, it is probably ok.

Did they say what gear oil they put into the transmission? The wrong gear oil can give those symptoms.

I'm not sure my paper work didn't list a brand name.

I would give them a call and ask.

Not in my Toyota, but in my Nissan, I used the properly specced oil from the manual and it shifted about like you describe. I went and forked over for the real Nissan oil and it was far far better. Last time I put in redline, and that had been fine too.

I put a new 5 speed in my truck and it was good to go immediately- shifted fine. Does is shift better once it warms up? Maybe try a different oil, like Redline. I think I have Mobil1 80W-90 in mine and it is notchy on the second gear shift on a cold morning. After a few miles it shifts fine.

I had the original clutch replaced in my 03 Tacoma with 236k miles on it.
The slave and master cylinder were not replaced.
It shifted fine after the replacement. So there are other issues going on with your Repair.
Two weeks after the new clutch and exhaust were replaced it was totaled by another driver.

OP, I got a little bit of bad news for you.

The 5-speed originally came with clutches from two different suppliers: AISIN and LUK. After years and years of problems including diaphram fingers breaking and a host of other failures, amd a number of TSBs with the LUK setup ToyMoCo finally had it with LUK and dumped them as a supplier in about '12 or '13. And beginning around 2010 or '11 Toy further stated that only AISIN clutches were to be put in for warranty work. Dealer parts departments also threw away any LUK stock they had.

    Sorry.
