Mild off road in MA/ New England for novice

Hi,
I'm getting my first truck this week (probably 2010 access cab 4x4 w/ I4 and 5speed) and looking for a place to check things out. I'm used to driving in new england weather in a sedan with traction control, but I've never driven a real 4x4. I want to find some place that's mild enough to not get in over my head but dirty enough to get my feet wet. I'm in metro boston but willing to travel for a day trip. Any insights are welcome. I'll probably check out all the dirt roads I know of, but would like to find a place that's recommended for easy off roading to get used to slow uphills, off camber and other small obsticlals. I'll post in the regional forum too!

When I lived on the East Coast, I did most of my offroading on access roads for the large scale electricity transmission lines. Lots of fun, but sometimes private property is part of that fun.

 

Yea the access roads are really the only place to go, sometimes make a trail around the locked ones. There are some awesome sand pits behind our local home depot, however its been fenced off for years but we ended up snipping the lock, then when we were done we bought them a new set from home depot and left it with both keys in the lock, they have yet to check back on it, both keys are still in it. I guess in retrospect we shouldn't have done that in the first place but we had one hell of a time.
