The plug is different since it's only a 30A outlet. I will buy a welder extension cord, and then change out the male plug. The welder only draws peak 26A so it'll be ok. I asked around in the welding thread and others have done this.

 

If only someone you knew did this professionally for many years and went to school for it - you could ask them...

It should be totally fine. The only potential issue i could see is if your dryer plug doesn't have a neutral and the welders does for the display. If thats the case, when you put your cord cap on you'll have to "improvise".

How far is your panel from your garage? Could you just add an outlet?

Edit: Do your dryer and welder cords have the same amount of prongs?

 

Both the welder plug and the dryer outlet are 3 prong so I thought it was just two hots and a ground, no neutral. Is that not the case? Also my panel is in my garage, but I'm renting so I can't add an outlet. And it's all nice and drywalled too so it's not like I could just temporarily add one myself.

 

Oh yeah in that case you're 100% fine.

A lot of times the device is 240 volt, but the display is 120 volt, so that part needs a neutral.

 

Ah that makes sense. When I'm cutting off the male end and connecting the new one, does it matter which hot goes where? Does that matter in AC?

 

Nope. Just make sure the ground is in the right spot

Sold my welder this morning for $300. With coupon, will buy the new one for $450 before tax. Just bought supplies for a 30' extension cord for $70. So all in about $550, or $250 out of pocket to upgrade to a 240v machine. It'll be well worth the increased capability and I can stop welding at my welders upper limit of thickness.

 

Selling of the welder must have fit into the "Essential" category. Did you accommodate a "no contact" delivery?

 

He's coming over in 10 min and I already have the stuff in a pile near my garage door. I'll stand 6' away and heckle him while he takes it

We have had the small welder vs larger welder conversation a few times. I hope you are happy with what you get. Will it have the capabillity to add a spool gun for aluminum?
