Looking to add a fuse to power outlet #2 and I have a couple of questions. I do not want constant power and want power to be cut when truck is off. Looking to power a midland mxt275.

    1) confirming power outlet 2 is the one inside the center console?

    2) Any issues adding a fuse to this?

    Thank you.

To check that the fuse powers that outlet, just remove the fuse and see if power to that outlet is lost. Also, the add-a-fuses I use say you can't use on any circuit over 10a (I think 10, but maybe 20?), so just make sure that the original fuse is 10a or less, and the same goes for the fuse you'd be adding. Others no, shouldn't be any issue.

The outlets are already fused. running a MX275 isn't going to overpower anything either. If you're not looking for constant power there really isn't any need to change anything up.

Trying to hard wire it for a clean install. I was thinking add a fuse on the plugs but looks like they are 15a fuses, could I switch the fuse to 10a? Looking to use the console fuse as I rarely use it.

Use another circuit. If you want to use an add-a-fuse, and want a circuit to only power your device with the ignition on, then use the IG1-2 or WASHER circuit. What fuse does your radio use? Otherwise, I would suggest a hard wire right to the battery with an inline fuse. Cleaner power with less interference for a radio is always better. Only drawback is that it could be powered all the time which I know you said you want to avoid.

You could supply battery power through a relay, and trigger it from the radio circuit positive lead.

Awesome thanks for the insight. Only reason I wanted to use an ignition powered source is to use the USB port on front of the midland radio to use for my dash cam, as I could hide the radio and wires completely. The radio has a 5a fuse.

Thank you everyone for your help.

If you're trying to hardwire it, I would buy a mini fuse holder that you can install under the dash and hardwire that in. They sell ones that hold like 4 fuses and they are fairly small and easy to tuck somewhere. If you decide to do future add ons, like switches for LED lights or whatever accessories it will make life a lot easier. The simple way of doing it would however mean that it has constant power. Making it come on with your ignition isn't that hard but will require some additional steps and the use of a relay.
