Popping / clunking after lift

Ok so I have searched and am unable to find a definitive answer.

2017 Tacoma trdpro

I just lifted the truck with king coil overs, icon UCA and icon RXT leaf packs.

I’m getting a clunking/ popping sound and It sounds like it’s coming from the front passenger side (I think) of the truck. It’s weird because it will do it on a cold start/ first drive of the truck after it has been sitting overnight or most of the day. It does it when I shift from park, to drive or reverse, let go of the brake and it clunks or clanks as it moves. I have also noticed it will do clank or clunk upon accelerating from a red light after being stopped for a minute or so. I have been reading and I believe it Maybe my LCA bolts aren’t torqued to spec? . I get no other creaks or clunks when turning or with suspension articulation. I have also noticed that the clunk or clank can vary in volume.

The noise was present after the lift but not nearly as noticeable after I had alignment completed.

Any ideas?

 

I would say retorque the lower shock bolt, all the LCA Bolts, and the UCA Bolts.

 

Be sure to get underneath and retorque all of your suspension bolts. Also look around and make sure everything has proper clearances. Are your sway bar end links contacting the coilovers? Any scratches or rubbing on the new blue anodized surfaces?

im taking it back to the alignment shop to get the LCA bolts checked.

I also am not running a front sway bar

 

And make sure when they toque the LCA Bolts it's on the ground not elevated.

 

That almost sounds like your brake pads shifting in the caliper. Does it happen when going from forward to reverse? Or Visa versa? When applying the brake?

 

It will do it in drive and reverse and it does it as soon as I let go of the brake pedal. Maybe my brake pads are sticking? I know I’m due for brakes soon But what puzzles me is I didn’t hear this issue/noise until after the lift. Then after the alignment, the noise become more pronounced.

I have heard the brake pad shift noise. I know that’s a normal thing. This just seems a lot louder and a lot more isolated as to when or how it occurs.

 

Do you think by putting the truck in neutral, instead of drive, then letting go of the brake will rule out a driveline issue?

 

Worth a try. Try to eliminate culprits.

 

I’ll try that in the AM. I’m gonna head to the alignment shop tomorrow morning.

anyone with any other ideas or suggestions based on the video?

 

How much lift is on the rear?
Grease your driveshafts regularly?
Maybe try weight in the back to change the working angles; see if that affects it.

 

I’ve noticed exactly what you’re describing on my 2019 DCSB Sport 4x4. Happens every morning when I pull out of the driveway. Coming from the passenger side front and only happens the one time. After that, I can’t recreate it. I noticed it before installing a 2” Eibach lift and it was unchanged after the lift.

Ill check my cab mounts I know I just had the fronts replaced by the dealer about a week before my lift.

 

Adam, Your new suspension could be in a bind.
When installing a new suspension hand tighten bolts, then place load by lowering vehicle on the ground, then torque all bolts, if bolts are torqued while vehicle is off the ground then parts will bind and make unusual popping sounds. Just my .02 cents.

 

So I went to the alignment shop today.

I’m was less than pleased with their service. I explained to them the issue I was experiencing. I showed them the video and explained to him that I was researching and reading up on what I believed the issue was. I said that my LCA bolts may not be torqued to spec. I requested that a torque wrench be used to torque the bolts to 100 ft lbs.

Next thing I see is the guy under my truck with a open ended wrench . He gets out and says yup they are tight. No issue here.
Long story short, I left, went to harbor freight and bought a torque wrench.

when I torqued the passenger side rear LCA bolt it was definitely not to spec. I was able to get about 2 turns out of the nut until it clicked. I was unable to get to the front LCA bolt since I have to drop the skid plate. I’m willing to bet that that bolt is loose too.

 

135 ft/lb and 139 ft/lb...

 

so it’s not 100? Lol I read it was. Maybe that was for the 2nd gen
