So I’ve contacted Diode Dynamics and asked them about some possible custom LED boards for our 3rd gen tail lights. There is a minimum order of 100. I was wondering if I decided to go this route how many people might be interested in some board replacements for their bulbs. This modification would require you cut open your tail lights and seal them back up at your own risk but with the reward of having some custom tail lights that not many would be able to have. Just wanted to test the waters before I proceeded any further with this idea. I have no idea what the price would end up being as of right now since I’ve only contacted them to see if it could be done.

Did you have more specifics on what you're trying to accomplish? I have the Total Tails Stage 1 from MESO, and since you're planning on using the same housing, I am having a hard time seeing in my mind what could possibly be changed.

Pretty much would be putting a board over where the stock one sits now. The yellow outline is kind of the two ideas I had to create a drop on for. Reverse/blinker for bottom section, still don’t know why Toyota got rid of amber turn, feels like thay should be a DOT/SAE issue. And a board to go over the top second to make a complete tail/brake. I know this is similar to what MESO has done and I don’t want take any credit since my idea came from his tail light upgrade. I just like trying stuff out myself and it’d be super fun to work with a company to make something of my own.C719BCD1-9D54-4B67-AD72-94680D362C60.jpgED39C16D-0F74-494D-BEB8-3BAFA12648A4.jpg

Gotcha... Thank you for explaining. I am a very visual learner, so the pictures definitely helped.

I got lucky snagging the Total Tails when I did... I know Stew works hard to put out product, but I can certainly empathize with how some folks end up not getting the upgrades they have mind because they sell out so fast, so I can respect you wanting to make something for yourself... I know I don't have the brains to do that. Good luck.

OP, have you tried cutting open a set of taillights? You may be downplaying the difficulty. It's going to take a steady hand and trial and error on where to cut.

Already got them cut open, wasn’t as bad as people think. Just takes some patience and a dremmel and you’re done. Just have to cut one the right spot(which I got looking at MESOs tail light post) and went to town.44F1DA43-69A5-47E7-B0A0-0632B6B45595.jpg

Since this is a starting from the scratch project, do you guys think this is possible? Use this dead space on the light for turn signal instead.

Something like that would be possible for the pro tail lights since they have clear lenses. It just wouldn’t work with the TRD red lenses, you’d still end up with a red turn signal, albeit separate from the brakes, which would still be better than stock form. Something to consider while in the developmental stage for sure.

Ture, But I think I saw Mercedes has one model with a red lens and amber LED still able to shine it through the lens. Wonder if that will work.

Hmm just went and read up on it a bit, apparently they use green to shine through the red to get an amber color, but it makes it dimmer, I suppose with the right board and brightness dimness of the green filter may not diminish the quality of light to bad. Something I could experiment with before send the idea off to DD
