Shingles is a painful, blistery rash. It can last four weeks or more and cause nerve pain lasting months longer. It can damage the nerve endings in your eye, so definately see your opthamologist asap. Anyone who has had chickenpox can develop shingles later in life, you don't catch it from anyone but yourself. About 99 percent of Americans 40 and older carry the chickenpox virus. The risk for shingles increases as we age.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Shingrix. It's only approved for adults 50 and older. It's given in two shots, 3 months appart. The drug is almost twice as effective as the older Zostavax vaccine.
About one in three Americans will get shingles in their lifetime. But only about a third of Americans receive a shingles vaccine. Cost may be part of the reason so few get the shot. The Shingrix vaccine costs $280. Zostavax costs around $200. Federal law requires insurance plans to cover most costs for vaccines the CDC recommends.

Our Medicare didn't cover it. Your drug plan should. We had to pay up front, then our drug plan reimbursed us, by adding the amounts back into our deductible. It was all SOP.

:rain: Morning folks. Raining steady but awaiting the wind. Tied down the deck furniture and barbecue so they don't blow all over the deck. Hope the wind isn't as bad as they are predicting. Hope everyone is safe.

What, you have to shoot yourself like a junkie?
Terrible nose bleed last night, blood just running out of my nose last night after getting back from cooking dinner in the woods, blew my nose and whoosh! TP soaked then dripped still, had to lay in bed after falling asleep in my chair, at least one nostril is ok this morning haven't tried the other yet, you'd thought a vein was cut.

I too got the original Zostavax at a Walgreens some years ago and the 2-stage SHINGRIX at the same Walgreens just two years ago. Don't recall what my co-pay was. It's probably in my files, but I'm too lazy to dig for it.

CVS website says all their stores give the vaccine... but websites sometimes tell you anything to get you into the store. Call your local store and see if they have it, then schedule a time to get it, if they do. Good luck. I won't be able to get it until the rash is gone, even then they won't vaccinate anyone until C19 settles down.

Different shots, is one better than the other, only after you have Shingles?

I don't want to be Dougie Downer but I've been graphing the official PA numbers and I don't see much change. The trend is still upward. It could be that counties closer to NYC will see the wave start to break a bit sooner, but the state as a whole is still climbing. I'm also tracking a few counties and those are all still upwards too. The best looking one at the moment is Montgomery County; they had an early outbreak which might be skewing their numbers a bit.

If you've had shingles, it's "highly unlikely" you'll get it again, but yes, it's possible. Get the latest vaccine regardless. SHINGRIX is the latest greatest, twice as effective as the earlier one. It's been out for a couple years, but places have a hard time getting it. The maker probably playing games to keep the price up. If you're a vet, try your closest VA. I've already got shingles, so I'll wait it out and try to get it from my doc, or CVS.
You can check here https://vaccinefinder.org/ to see where to get it.
Our druig plan insurance wil reimburse the costs by adding it back into our deductible. every plan is different, though.

Friend of my dad's / family friend said his insurance would not cover the shot. :notsure: all the details though. But good luck

My doc said something along the lines of “If I give you the shot you’ll pay for it but if CVS gives it your insurance will pay.” So maybe ask around.

Last time I went to the doc, had the flu and wasn't feeling very well, so completely forgot to ask :anonymous: But will next time I see him.

A good insurance plan is a personal choice. I for one, want the absolute best I can get, so we have it. When we go to the doctor, hospital, we can focus on what's needed, not the costs. When they see us coming, they know they won't have any problem getting paid. It makes a psychological difference in your care, even though it should not. It's just the way people are wired.

I learned this morning that our local CVS has the SHINGRIX vaccine now, but we can't get it until the Covid19 chit is under control. That may be a while yet.
