Alpine iLX-W650

I mean the ones in the cluster (multi function display), between the speedo and tach. Some of that data comes for the headunit so I want to make sure I know they all work or if they don’t, which ones I’ll lose.

I am having trouble with the micro bypass. I hooked up as directed (or so I thought) and now my truck thinks my e brake is on when it’s down and I’m driving. And still no access to settings! Any help would be appreciated

 

Not sure why y'all think you need to bypass the parking brake lockout? Not something that ever inconvenienced me in any way.

If your attention is diverted that long away from the road, pull the hell over anyway.

 

Is it possible to play video streaming from YouTube or another app on the headunit when connected using the CarPlay function?

 

I have one of these arriving today. I ordered it from Amazon so i can still return it.

Do you guys still love the headunit or is there something new that came out that is better?

 

I have one of these coming tomorrow. I had a really difficult time deciding between this and the Sony XAV-AX5000 as it's $50 off on Crutchfield right now since it pushes a couple more watts RMS. I had an Alpine in my old Celica and it was the best car stereo I've ever owned so I went with this one. How are you liking it so far?

 

Do you have to connect the stereo to OBD for 2nd gen Tacoma's for it to detect parking brake? I also wasn't sure how it would work on a manual transmission so I went ahead and got the bypass just in case. I'll be installing it tomorrow first without the bypass and just hope it works and keeping the bypass as backup if needed.

 

I used the harness adapters provided by Crutchfield. I'm sure one of the connections is the parking brake sensor.

Again, it's never bothered me not once. Anything I needed to adjust on the fly, was more than easy enough without applying the parking brake twice. Anything the brake being applied allows access to, you should pull your ass off the road

 

so far so good but actually i havent used it much yet. I daily drive an IS-F and use the taco mostly for motorcycle hauling on weekends. I have a couple trackdays lined up this weekend so i will have to drive a few hours and ill be able to give a better review on it.

Like everyone else is saying, you pretty much need to order the bypass and wire it in to be able to really use it. super simple install for that. Carplay works nicely but after reading reviews there might be a difference in sound quality compared to bluetooth. A few weeks ago i bought that android headunit px6 whatever it was and that was a piece of crap, and luckily bought it from Amazon so i sent it right back.

 

What exactly are you folks doing that it's such an issue with the parking brake? Inquiring minds...

Also, be sure you check for firmware updates to help with CP and AA.

 

I haven't had an issue with it (yet). I just want to make sure I had everything I need when I go to install it today. I wasn't sure if the parking brake on my truck would be detected because it has a manual transmission. Same reason I cannot install a remote start without a bunch of complicated safety stuff.

 

It's definitely detected. I'm also MT.
Like I said, I'm sure one of the wires in the harness is for the brake, but on my OEM HU, that wasn't a thing. You just couldn't be in motion to get deeper into settings and take your eyes off the road for longer than 10 seconds.

Alpine must have more respect for the public than Toyota, to require the brake to be engaged, twice.
I'm not trying to preach, I just don't care about "having to put on my parking brake".

I considered looking into remote start as well. Then found the hang-ups with clutch cancel and making sure you don't park in gear, etc...

 

A short update...

I have mixed feelings about the headunit but overall pretty good! Like stated before, the sound during apple carplay is terrible compared to the sound during regular bluetooth, its a huge difference. I found myself using a 12v plug to charge my phone rather than the headunit and carplay to have the better quality, I just left waze on my phone in a phone holder.

I would suggest if you're buying this JUST for carplay(which i assume most people are), to look elsewhere.

Last thing - The bypass module...dont think about it and just buy it with the headunit, you pretty much need it to get into any of the more advanced menus(and also its easier to wire it in instead of looking for your parking brake wire and cutting the harness up).

 

I just installed this and too have mixed feelings. Ordered through Crutchfield and got the necessary harness to work with premium JBL sound. It’s a nice unit, everything works as expected but the sound is not so good. Gotta use the EQ and maybe turn the TYT-01 (harness) down a bit because now more than ever I actually hear the woofer and it’s trying to blow itself up sounds like. I’m listening to songs I know well and it seems the OEM sounded better at higher volumes. I got the ready made harness from Crutchfield as well, so I gotta double check their work and maybe the adapter too.

 

Put one in a month ago and love it. I just picked up a set of Focal components for the front doors along with some Kilmat for the doors and the rear bulkhead. I hope I have soem time to install them in the upcoming week.

 

Got mine installed thanks to this and other threads. Total noob, probably took 3 hours of connecting the wires, 4 hours for the actual install including taking stuff out and putting it back in again when I forgot to do things. Steering wheel controls, aftermarket backup camera, wired CarPlay, and parking brake bypass all working. Ended up jamming up the hazard light button somehow; a corner of the button won't pop back out, but I can still press it in/out on the other side. I've had one "crash." I had my phone plugged in while parked, then shifted into reverse, the screen briefly showed the backup camera before going black with a loud buzzing sound. Cycling the ignition made it work again. Hope it doesn't happen again, but I wouldn't be surprised if I fudged up a wiring connection or two back there.

 

$310 Alpine iLX-W650 7" Double DIN Touchscreen Digital Multimedia Receiver with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Alpine iLX-W650 with KTA-450 with all Infinity Speakers etc. Decent Decision?

I called Crutchfield and they talked me into the Alpine iLX-W650 head unit along with the KTA-450 amp to go with it. I am replacing a stock ‘05 Tacoma audio unit which I honestly thought sounded great...hard to believe how insanely cheap the stock speakers are they have a very small magnet on them and look like they are made out of cardboard, lol.
This is going in an access cab not a 4 door so this setup should definitely be more than enough power for inside my vehicle to put a smile on my face.
I was talked into getting all Infinity with the REF-9630cx 6x9 Component speakers for my front speakers with the small tweeters that come with this package to give me truer highs and have the splitters all wired up and ready to go...and the Infinity REF-6532ex speakers for the rear “access cab” doors in my Tacoma.

I do not mind having to plug in my IPhone 11 Pro Max so the wire does not bother me. I am really looking forward to using Apple CarPlay.

I realize the rear speakers are not going to have tons of bass but the speakers in front will have a lot more...not to mention I am also throwing a decent Subwoofer in the rear of my truck to simply make up for any bass this particular audio setup may lack.

I mostly listen to metal more than anything but also classical and ‘80s music as well. I am all over the place even some rap but not much. I am mostly a metal head but the metal I listen to has pretty deep tight lows. (Meshuggah for instance if anyone has ever heard of them).

I finally am almost finished installing everything just need to get the amps power lead to the car battery and ground the other one...and of course splice into the main parking brake sensor on my truck ( I may do a brake bypass in the future).

I really hope I went with an amazing package here. I am definitely expecting this setup to absolutely blow away the cheap stock factory audio unit that came with my truck...and actually my ears are so used to my current cheap stock system sounding awesome with tons of power!!! ...so I do not see myself being disappointed at all here.
This is more than double what a
currently have. ...and I am planning on using “Apple CarPlay” more than anything else for this unit as I can simply play music right from my Apple Music library which has a very extensive amount of music on.
Sound cool?

UPDATE:
Well got everything plugged and I only have rear speakers playing and even with the gains all the way down the Kta-450 amp gets pretty hot to the touch.
I called crutchfield and have all the trigger jumpers all correct.
I put this all together EXACTLY like Crutchfield told me to.

Well I have got to say…I messed around with the gains for the rear speakers and wow those things come to life and those are very weak infinity’s…I can only imagine how tremendous the front 6x9’s will sound when/if I get them playing.

 

It’s always something simple. I ran mine without the optional amp, so I’m not sure exactly how it wired in. Make sure you got the right RCA’s (sometimes the output and aux input are right next to each other). If it’s not an insane amount of work, hook up without the amp first to verify the setup. If that all works, add the amp in. Is there a setting on the head unit to switch from internal amp to line out signal? I’d dig through both manuals slowly again to find that one little step that got missed. I had a similar step on mine that two calls to crutchfield didn’t fix, missed one little chunk of the wire harness. Keep us posted!
