So, I'm a long-time fan of the books. Read them all. Multiple times. Also read the Brian/Kevin prequels. I also LOVE the 1984 David Lynch monstrosity for different reasons. Both of the SciFi channel miniseries (Dune and Children of Dune) were good, were a lot more faithful to the books, but were just missing a little something.

Now we have Denis Villeneuve doing his take on the Frank Herbert masterpiece. Will it measure up? Will it suck more than Battlefield Earth? Love it? Hate it?

Opinions, links, teasers, discussion, general bullshit, "how can I get a 6' lift on my ornithopter?" all welcome.

I'm excited. I think we have the CGI technology now to capture the metaphysical imagery that Herbert wrote about melange.

I just realized autocorrect changed ornithopter to ornithologist.

    Not today, autocorrect. NOT TODAY!

I've always felt Dune was THE sci-fi novel that BEST tapped into our individual imaginations. That's why any attempt to adapt it to the big or small screen fell short, at least monetarily or stylistically.

I've seen them all and none were as good as I envisioned but I will keep an open mind to this latest attempt!

Edit: Just saw the video you posted @CaptAmerica , thanks for posting! Definitely piqued my interest

It was a great series. (damn, its been over 20 years since Ive last read those books.)

I'll be optimistic about the new adaptation, I hope it does well.

The first novel was so complicated that there will have to be cuts and changes made to make it palatable for the screen. When that happens, someone will complain about it.

That whole documentary was one long acid trip of INSANITY. I loved the whole thing. While the end result would have been far less Dune than even Lynch's version, it really set a high bar for imagination.

Looks like it would've been mindblowing....

I'm sure @23Skidoo would appreciate the casting for Emperor :D

Ooh. You brought out Battlefield Earth as the pinnacle of suck. Even Uwe Boll isn't that bad.

So I think much of the casting is outstanding. Can't wait to see Stellan Skaragård, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Rebecca Ferguson in their roles. I'm less certain about Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya. I guess it's to cater to the younger audiences, but I have doubts as to their acting chops for a film of this magnitude and seriousness. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Something I have been wondering is how Denis Villeneuve will incorporate the Beduin/Middle Eastern influences found in Frank Herbert's books into the movie, especially with the negative connotation of words and ideas like "mujahideen" and "jihad", although I don't think the latter was introduced until later books in the series. I may be overthinking the sensitivities of our culture, but this is America and America is weird.

Most importantly, what size tire can I fit on a sandworm without rubbing, and will a 255 or 285 look cooler?

I think 3755s should fit Shai Hulud with plenty of room to spare. Little makers will still have to stick with 33s on 16” rims.

All aired down to 15 pounds, of course.

    Obviously.

But what do you think about a Bull Bar install?

The mental image of a sandworm, Shai Hulud or otherwise, with a bullbar on its face cracked me up.

I’ve been waiting for the first trailer to drop. There was a promise of August...and we’re running out of August.

I did see some production stills. I'm really hoping they keep the rectangle defensive shields.

If you remember the books, shields just had a shimmer. I think it would be cool to give them a subtle effect where it looks like the air around the person is thicker, and moves with them as they move. Since it’s “the slow blade that penetrates the shield” any bullets would force that area of shield to harden, while a slower move would be like sticking your hand into Jello.

That would definitely be cool. CGI had advanced so much, it's entirely possible to see the level of detail we want.
