I don't typically post on here, but I'm curious if anyone has had issues with white Tacoma paint. This is my fourth Tacoma and the paint job is starting to chip off. I've never had paint issues with any of my Tacoma's. This is 100% faulty paint, no accidents. The truck just broke 38k miles and it seems as if the Toyota people keep sending me around in a circle. I'm not a bitchy type of person, but when things are faulty and the quote is only $450. Don't tell me a company like Toyota can't fix this. Anybody else ever had this issue? Definitely getting irritated and I wish Toyota was all Japan like it use to be.

What year? Toyota used to use single stage white which was a single bombproof urethane layer. However a few years ago Toyota switched to 2-stage with a clearcoat for white.

Not having a clearcoat to worry about is why I always went with white in the past. That said, the paint is one of the most harped on problems w Tacomas of all years.

2017. The first dealer told me they extended the warranty on white toyotas, but apparently not the Tacoma. Someone somewhere did something with that faulty process.

Do you know when they switched paint systems? I have a 2019 Tacoma in white and I’m wondering if this is an issue I should worry about.

You’d think Toyota would try to fix the issue to avoid warranty claims in the first place, but I know better than that hahah.

OP - sorry about your paint. File a claim with Toyota if you’re still under warranty? I thought I read somewhere there was a recall out for super white Toyotas affected by this issue.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Until my 2019 I’ve owned white Tacoma’s. Four, all gens, 97, 99, 03 and 09. All thin white paint on them. I actually burnt through my 03 hood paint while buffing. I’ll agree, my white 79 SR5 I bought back in 1980 did seem to have better paint on it. But I will be getting another white (Sport) in 2022, when I turn this one in. I like the white so much more.

The super white (040) is a single stage paint. Not sure why you would let the dealership jerk you off as the warranty is a performance contract between the owner of the vehicle and Toyota. The dealer is not a party to that contract they are only the authorized agent to perform the work. What you should do is call the dealership and make an appointment for the Toyota regional rep to look at your vehicle...he or she would be the authority as to whether Toyota will honor your claim. In short a dealer can deny a customer concern or customer complaint but what they can’t do is unilaterally deny a claim on a performance contract like a warranty. There are a few weasel clauses in the warranty but to my knowledge this type of claim is valid for 5 years or 60k miles. So you got a shot at getting it fixed for the bubble just have to get the people you have a contract with to look at it and file a claim. Good luck

Are you sure that 2017 Tacoma has single stage superwhite? I spent some time with my local bodyshop a few months ago with my 040 white trying get it tightened up and they said 040 single stage was reformulated a couple times before 2015 when Toyota changed it to a 2 stage. I have seen enough mention of superwhite switching to 2 stage on the net that I suspect it may have actually happened. I don’t have a gen3 so I don’t have any first-hand experience with it though.

I would like to know also. For grins I contacted Toyota and actually got x2 responses from different people. One said single stage the other said bc/cc. By feel and look I think my 2020 is single stage but would be nice to know for sure.

For those with paint flaking off, built in Texas or Mexico? I wonder if there’s any correlation.

It has been tested, doesn’t hold true. People from both plants have the issue, and even more people from both also have perfect paint. Maybe a rabbit sneezed in Paris and caused the bad paint that day.
