Toyota has it all f'd up with 2005+ sticks. The 1GR and RA60 in the 2nd gen is a mismatch IMO being that the transmission is intended for V8 Camaros. Then they put a better truck transmission in the 3rd gen but hang it behind an engine that I surmise would benefit from a more car-like spread.

i agree 2.0 is the deal.

getting it may be difficult. first thing is watch the used marketplace here like a hawk for used OV flash kits. i don't think they are available new any longer.

the f'd up gearing referred to here is, for me, 100% corrected with OV 2.0. i mean that literally.

i could say the gearing is not the problem, but the muted factory tune is the actual problem. wake up the motor, you bought the hardware so use it.

He's still around, but you really want to score a used Flash Kit as he is getting away from tune development. Going forward it will only be tuning tools, but Flash Kits will get support.

Don't worry too much about the OVT MT thread. It is generally good in there. Yeah, stay away from the Dev thread.

I'm a 2nd gen so I dunno if it's even an option. I just don't like the spread, the engine's fine. The 2-3-4-5 ratios are too close. I'll go 1-2-4 or 1-3-5 on highway on ramps depending on how far I push 1st. The RA60 has 4.171 1st, 1:1 5th and 0.85 6th. I'd like to have seen 4.3 1st gear with this upper spread, then it would have been easier to dial in with axle gears.

You 3rd gen guys lost a little 1st (3.98) but got a decent 0.85 5th and 0.71 6th with 1:1 being 4th as it should be for a truck. There's a bias up and with the right axle gears it works.

While the 1-2 spread is a bit of a jump for this engine, reverse is the worst gear choice in the 3rd gen M/T. Make that lower, put 2nd a bit closer to 1st, and 6th a wee bit higher and it's pretty much perfect IMHO.

The 2nd Gen has 3.73 axle gears whereas the 3rd has 4.30

Yeah, exactly. Any lower than 3.73 and I'd go from kind of high RPM to screaming Banshee on the highway and taller to get highway RPM I give up any advantage the lower 1st has.

If the government would fire their free money stimulus cannon at me I'd go with a Marlin Tacobox and gear for the highway. Not holding my breath.
