1st Oil Change Mileage

I just bought a brand new 2020 TRD Off-Road and am wondering when I need to do the first oil change. I know Toyota recommends every 10k, but I've always slept better doing it every 5k.

I was told that with a brand new car, you're supposed to change the oil for the first time at 500 miles after it's first been broken in and then you switch to regular intervals moving forward. Is there any truth to this?

 

Change it whenever you want. Just don’t exceed 10,000 miles or so.

 

I don't want to have to waste oil doing a change that isn't needed at 500 miles though. Is there any truth to new cars needing a first change at 500? Haven't heard this before and it sounds odd, but want to do everything I can to make this truck last decades.

Every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Which ever comes first.

 

I always change the oil when it hits 1k miles, just for piece of mind, then regular intervals after that.

There are theories. Some people say there’s proof, most people say there is no proof.
Your not hurting anything by doing it early. Whatever makes you feel better. Just don’t exceed the recommended miles or time.

Change it once around 2k or after it's broken in, and then every 10k afterwards, unless you like wasting money in which case you can change it more frequently.

I did my first change around 3k and the oil did not look good..

 

I remember 500 for the first oil change on my new 94 S10. I heard that in not necessary now with new engines. I did mine at 3k first and then plan to do every 5k going forward.

 

Here's the deal.
If you plan on keeping the truck for a "normal" amount of time, 100-120k or less, than go with the 10k intervals.
If you plan on keeping it for a legendary amount of miles, then do the 1st drain after the break-in period then every 5k.

My sticker on the windshield regarding the no charge oil changes is every 5000.
fitsy 5 changes are on Toyota

 

Using a quality full synthetic, every 10k. Using Dino, every 4-5k.

This is all relative to conditions used in. On paved roads long trips, 10k.
Frequent dirt roads, long idling times (like a LEO car) 5k.

If you decide to change it more frequently, then that is your prerogative and $$.
