My detecting partner has dug a couple and they are pretty cool. They can be worth some $$$. I'm searching for my first...

Damn you guys, I’m stuck here while you are outside detecting cool stuff and it’s raining outside here and all I have to do is listen to a online work meeting and so I put some tunes on with the mic mute on over it cause I didn’t have anything to say, all while pretending like I was taking good notes...

So @Hobbs, I remember you saying you had a PI machine, which do you have? Also, I was curious if you think the older ones (like the SD2100v2) and such are worth it for depth. I can pick up a nickel at 9-11 inches or so in the air with my GM, but still have to do ground testing to be accurate. What can your PI do and have you used the older models? If so, any comments?

I have a Garrett ATX, and a MineLab GPX 5000, and I run the 5000 exclusively when searching for gold. Big difference between the two machines. The 5000 was Minelab's flagship gold machine before the GPZ 7000 came out maybe four or five years ago.
My buddy has a 2100v2 and says he would not touch it (his was given to him). He also has a 2200 and has found quite a bit of gold with it. The 2200 is a good machine, but he has added a couple of improvements including a Gold Screamer, upgraded batteries, and coils. The older machines can and do find gold, but they are not as stable (noisy) and (arguably) don't go as deep. If you are contemplating moving up, buy as much machine as you are able. I bought the ATX and 3-4 years later upgraded to the 5000. Kinda wish I had just bought the 5000 and been done. Oh well...
It's very difficult to beat a MineLab P.I. machine. They do have a steep learning curve, but when you get it, you will find gold (assuming you put yourself in the right spot). And MineLab's are notorious for not air testing well.

    I hope this helps.

I went out for a couple hours after work today and made an interesting find. Not sure what it is. It's made of lead and has "127" on one side, and "C&CR", which I am inclined to believe means Carson & Colorado RailRoad. One of my buddies suggested a tie or clip for a money bag. Don't know. I'll show my railroad expert friend in the morning.

Thanks for the input, I still have a big learning and experience curve with my gold monster. I’m just wondering if I’m missing anything below my reach. Some places I go it may not hurt to cover them over with a deeper hitting machine. Perhaps I should just wait and get a good 5000 instead of spending less for something older. There are some low prices right now on 2200v2’s... I just don’t know how much more that particular model could pickup compared to what the GM can do at the same depths...

Looks like crimp-on lockout (safety & legal) issues that gas and electric companies would seal usage meters with. They were made with a crimped lead too.

    Hice find, by the way.

If I were you, I would use and learn your GM, and see if this hobby is for you. I understand that you are enthusiastic and enjoying yourself. And great for you! That's what it's all about! But I would give it a little time, unless you have money to burn.

You’re totally right, one of these days I’ll just have to go looking with someone who does have one just to see what they can do. Definitely don’t have money to burn!
