    Hi all,

Never had a Tacoma or a truck before but the Tacoma's look awesome so I'm wanting to buy one but not sure what to do? I'm going through the lemon law on my car now and they are going to buy it back so looking at some different vehicles. I want something reliable and don't want all this hassle again with cars breaking down over and over and over and incompetent techs at the dealer trying to fix it.

I like the off road one the best as far as looks go but I will never go off road probably and all I really want to spend is $30k max. I know I can get a used nice condition with low miles for around that price. Is it worth getting a used off road over a new SR5?

The other option is I have a local dealer that is selling a new 2020 SR5 in cement gray 4 doors and black wheels. I really don't care for the tires/wheels or the grill on this one but the truck in this color even though it's an SR5 looks pretty good in real life. Not a whole lot different than an off road. A new offroad is like 10 grand more than this SR5 at the dealer. The asking price is 33k but I feel like I could get them to come down some maybe to 30k or less. I really don't know how much Toyota dealers move on these. I was thinking when it comes to get new tires I could just replace them with better looking tires/wheels if I wanted so they don't look so weak.

I also have seem some old 2016/2017 limited models for around $30k.

    What do you guys think?

I was in a similar situation. Used trdor or new sr5. Wanted to save money and didn't need the off road. Went for the sr5. It fell through and I ended up with a new trdor. Suspension is the main difference between them. Other small features like radio and windows maybe. I'd say get whichever one has the side mirror cameras and front rear camera. If you're not going off road you don't need an off road. Get the one you can afford with the things you like

I would buy a SR5 and go brand new.

Each trim handles slightly differently on the road. Take another drive in each and see which ride you like better.

Also, you should be able to negotiate a good deal. If they aren't willing to come down much on price, tell them you'll see how they feel next month and walk.

I just noticed a few new base Off Roads on Cars.com for 33K, think they are only priced about $1800 more than a similarly configured OR.

Buy the new truck, especially since you don't go off road and can avoid having to pay for repairs etc for a few years. Besides, that one you are looking at is very nice.

Don't get the Off Road, if you don't plan on Off Roading. Get yourself a nice 2wd SR

probably the sr5 - plus you'll probably get better interest rates on the new car. Side note, right now as the buyer you have the most leverage i think we've had since maybe 2008. The reality is lots of people have lost their jobs or had their income impacted and are not purchasing cars/trucks. You have all the leverage in the world to get the best deal possible.
The dealers are also worried about uncertainty in the months to come (will this get better, will it get worse etc.) and would probably rather take guaranteed business now than risk it in the future so don't be so quick to take any deal you can get and pit some of them against each other

There is something to be said for getting exactly what you need. I’ve got tons of friends with optioned-out trucks that never need the 4wd, never tow anything with their 6L diesels, etc.

Surprisingly it’s not that bad based on what my fiancée is saying in my area.
She works for an Autogroup that owns multiple dealerships.
They lost maybe 15% traffic, but there has been an influx of higher end new models being bought with some customers asking to print COVID19 deal somewhere on their receipt even though there isn’t a special going on.
I think it’s based on location though.

I had the same dilemma last year. Ultimately I decided to get the OR because of the added capability, softer suspension, and the likelihood that I would get most of the $1800 premium back upon trade/resale. It appears that the 2020 SR5 has creeped closer to the OR with larger infotainment, power seats, etc so its a tougher call now.

My choice was a new 2020 SR5 vs new 2019 OR. I'm not a real offroader, but the rear locker has already made life easier on steep, muddy agricultural access roads. Knowing what I know now, I'm still not sure the rear locker was worth the tradeoff of the power seat. I have 1.5" seat spacers and I still want the rear of the seat higher to make it level with the front. I don't care about the tech differences, someone else may.

Based on the truck your looking at and if you never plan on going offroad or needing 4WD get the 2020 SR5. I'm assuming that the 2019 OR is 2WD and not the 4WD model. I went with the OR and sometimes I wish I would have gotten the 4WD SR5, less things that could break later. Like others have said, drive both and see which one you like better.

Its worth getting the 2020 over a used 2016-2019. Lots of new features in the 2020 on SR5 trim and up. Some of these may be on the older models but my SR5 came standard with power driver seat, power sliding rear window, android auto / apple car play w/ 8" screen, toyota safety sense and adaptive cruise control, etc.

I went with the a 2020 SR5 because I planned on ripping out the suspension anyways to lift it 2.5" inches. So only big thing the TRD offroad has that mine does not is the rear locker / crawl control. Which I would never use those. I would like leather seats and a moon roof but those addo ns get pretty expensive anyways. Plus I got an 4door long bed for $31,500 before fees in February.

That's a nice SR5.. its what I would get too if not doing any offroad. See if you can get them to around 31K before TTL
