I would also buy a chain measurement tool and carefully examine the chainrings. Buying a worn out drivetrain can be very costly to replace.

Knowing the average rider, and a 2014 bike, I would assume the chain is shot and the teeth have 1/3rd life at best

Older Stumpjumpers use proprietary rear shocks as well. Its still serviceable but just something to keep in mind. We charge 175 at our shop for a fork overhaul just to give you an idea and 100 for a shock iirc.

Like the other guys said - replacing worn out drivetrain can get expensive quick.

If you're the second, or later, owner of a Specialized or Roval product, you are eligible for a two-year warranty from the date of the original retail purchase.

I'd go with no initially unless some of those missing components come with it and its rideable.

I have an unfounded theory if suspension decals are missing that steed was ridden hard af. There is no basis for this but in my experience of flipping bikes the more customized a bike is the worse it was ridden

Did he say why the shock has a black air canister on it? If its aftermarket for swapped from a lower model float?

I don't doubt at all it's been ridden hard. I mean it's a 6k+ bike new...what kind of guy buys that and doesn't ride it hard?

I just know you guys all know this stuff better than I do so trying to help a new to the sport friend get a deal if it's worth it.

Yea there are lots of red flags here. An un-matched wheelset is definitely high up there on the list of what the hell happened here?
I learned a lesson when selling my house a couple of years ago; do not put it on the market until it is ready. People cannot unsee glaring problems even if you fix them. I'm sure this was not online for sale and its through a friend but I definitely would not recommend a problem bike to a friend getting into the sport.
