I'm sure it's a case of a taco'd wheel, which I personally have found out is not hard to do..lol

I guess it is kinda like "why buy a brand new truck and take it on the trails?" but I feel like with MTB you buy a real expensive one for a serious purpose...and that's not to take it to your local greenway lol

Its just personal to me but wheels "should" match. This is a franken bike and thats fine but its hard to nail a value on something that looks like it was pieced together from a parts bin.

I agree. I've got about $8k in mine, but I ride it as intended.

Man if you can stretch your budget I would buy new. If you are just getting into the sport I would veer away from "project" bikes and just get something you can ride. Also, a shop will take care of any necessary tuneups for free as part of the deal. You can tinker later but now you need to find out if you love it or not.

Hardtails are the best! Here's my titanium steed; thinking about swapping the fork for something rigid.

Are you referring to that bike specifically or in general? For me I just wouldn’t trust a 6 year old carbon bike from someone that couldn’t post pictures of the bike that’s ready to go. Makes me wonder about maintenance and how many times that bike was hucked to flat.

In general decent pictures with all parts are a start. They should be calling out any dents if aluminum and wear in paint that could be down to the carbon. No damage to carbon at all. If something is mismatched then explain it. Like I had a fuel I sold a few years back with black chainstays (bike was greenish) that I had replaced under warranty do to a crack in the weld. Hopefully no banged up derailleurs. I’d also ask about bars and stem. I bought a bike with a broken stem face plate that I didn’t know about until I received the bike. I was annoyed.

so just for some of that, this isn't a for sale ad. a guy I work with bikes with the guy selling the bike and it was just a quick exchange of texts of "hey you know anybody who'd be interested?" hence why there aren't great "for sale" photos.

Honestly it really depends on the up-close shape of that thing. Carbon condition is a big variable now that the rest of the bike has been thrashed. And like others have said the drivetrain has seen better days.

If you pass I'll prolly still buy it tho lol

Ah okay, fair enough. Changes it a little bit if he can be vouched for, I’m personally not a fan of buying older carbon bikes though, but that’s just me.

I can't vouch for the guy, or the riding....just the lack of it being "ready to sell" since it's just been a quick conversation with him and a guy I work with lol

I deserve it, I made him ride a GT Aggressor Pro last week for his first ride then immediately tossed him on a brand new stumpy to see how it felt haha! absolute dick move.
