I know that it’s next to impossible to try different guitars in person, right now, but...
In my personal experience, the neck profile of a guitar has an ENORMOUS effect on how easy it is to play. I learned this the hard way. When I picked the guitar up 18 months ago, I bought an Epiphone Les Paul. It had the “slim taper” D shaped neck. I was able to play it, without much trouble, but..
I decided a few months in, to get a stratocaster, as well. When I began playing the “modern C” shape of the Strat, it was like I’d advanced as a player automatically! Comfort is EVERYTHING!
I ended up selling the Epi, because I stopped playing it. I do currently have a Les Paul, but I tried different necks this time. The slim taper D neck give me hand cramps, but even though I have smaller hands, I am super comfortable with the 50s neck, which is rounder, and less flat.
Seriously, see if you can wait until you can try a few out. Or buy from a retailer with a good return policy.

    Agree. Neck profile is everything.
Better to wrap your hands around one for 30 mins or so and give it a good test ride.

For sure. There's a local pawn shop that they specialize in guitars, pretty sure they do repairs and everything too. They're still open right now, so I may try and see if they have any of the models I'm looking at. If I'm gonna be spending $500 or more for a new guitar, I'll be making sure it fits me and I'll love it and be comfortable with it.

Ya. This is why I'm just gonna wait it out a bit. Get better with what I have now, so when I can go and actually test out new equipment, I'll be able to at least strum some notes to see if I'll like it

Guitar shops often will rent out guitars for a monthly fee, and if you want to buy it a good portion of the rental price goes toward the purchase. I've done this for most of the guitars I have owned, probably close to a dozen thru the last 20 yrs. good way to test drive

How do I pick an amp? What are things to look for? Things to avoid?

Just as personable as buying a guitar.
You gotta play a bunch. I'd stick with a simple 15-20 watt. Crate, Peavey, vox or similar.

tube amps are vastly preferred. but there are a lot of great modeling amps that can give you a myriad of sounds for practicing and solid state/ digital has come a long way. is it going to be a home practice amp or something you'll be jamming with?

I’m just learning so it’ll be a home practice amp. I don’t have any friends close by that I could even jam with :pout:

it comes with time, i started with a tiny Crate that sounded like a donkey farting in a metal trash can, but it worked for the times (early 2000s).

i'd recommend a small digital modeling amp, it'll give you enough sounds so you won't get bored. Peavey Vyper, Line 6 Spider, Fender Mustang... all good options. especially the Roland Cube series.
