Anyone have an issue with the 2nd gen ( 2009) airbags not deploying after a front end collision?

Family member borrowed my 09 DCLBSport had a front DS corner collision no airbags deployed. Curious if anyone has had similar....

How hard a hit? It take a pretty significant hit to set the air bags off.

There are tons of data calculations involved in the computer decision to deploy the airbags or not. Just going off a frontal drivers side collision doesn't mean much. Nobody that is honest can make a definitive decision on that description.

I hope they are alright and nobody was injured.

Ill see it tomorrow. It was towed to a yard nearby. From what I understand it was hard enough that his head hit the windshield and cracked it. Every airbag in the Infiniti he hit went off

Hope he’s ok first and foremost. Was he wearing his seat belt. With the seat belt on and working correctly that is interesting. Again hope he’s ok.

He is OK. stubborn SOB didn't want to get looked at at hospital. I was just curious as my Brother in law was hit last year in his '12 forerunner from behind and every airbag deployed

Mine was not recalled. Had it into the dealer for drive shaft, leaf springs all replaced under warranty and asked them about airbags. It showed no other recalls or TSB's when had it in last year

He is 6'3 and kinda lean. I haven't asked him if he was wearing belt. As the crow flies, he was less than 1/2 mile from his house and on his way out after I dropped the truck off to him to use. My guess is he hadn't buckled up yet. Find out tomorrow

Air bags kinda need a head on hit to deploy. Corner hits usually won’t deploy them.

As @Jimmyh stated, there's a lot more to the "decision" to deploy airbags or not than just a crash. One of the big variables is just how rapid the deceleration actually is. For instance, if you hit something solid - square on the end of a frame horn, the deceleration is more rapid than if you hit a front fender which simply crumples up. When the crash energy that might reach an occupant is great enough, the bags go off. If enough energy is absorbed / dissipated by the vehicle structure - and thus is not likely to reach an occupant - the bags to do not go off.

As for him hitting his head on the windshield, he wasn't wearing a seatbelt. And if he says he was, he wasn't wearing it properly. Hopefully he's ok and learned an important lesson.

In my job, I have seen a lot of wrecked vehicles with and without air bag deployment. I have seen vehicles that were barely crunched and the air bags went off and vehicles that were really smashed in and no deployment. I saw a Tahoe that slid sideways into a curb and the side curtain air bag went off with no body damage because the ECU thought it was going to flop over on it’s side. The bottom line is that air bags are there to cushion your head and slow the rate of deceleration of your head. In the movies where they have to pop the air bags, that’s fake. The air bags have about 1 1/2” holes in them. The size of the holes is calculated to allow gradual deflation as your face is smashing into it. Personally I would not want the air bags going off unless I was in a severe accident where my neck would snap or my brain slam the front of my skull. I have seen people that got hit in the face with an air bag. Face bruised, broken glasses, and thumbs dislocated because they were holding onto the steering wheel. The bottom line is air bag deployment is a best guess decision based on a calculated combination of conditions. As mentioned above, if his head hit the windshield, he wasn’t wearing the seatbelt.

And now for the rest of the story...

That is why the airbags didn't deploy. No seat belt = no airbag. If the air bag deployed without a seat belt it could very well kill the occupant and probably would.

    Now we all know.

Always buckle up. And the chances of a modern SRS system not responding correctly in a crash are VERY slim.

Yep. This exactly. Signs point to this fool not wearing his seatbelt.
