GREAT NEWS FOR THROWOUT BEARING / RELEASE BEARING ISSUES!!!! V6 6SPEED

Hey everybody. I wanted to give you guys my story and some details that may help you in your quest to get rid of the squeaky / cracked throwout bearing issue that all 2005-2010 Tacoma's suffer from.

The chirping / wine / whirl noise caused by the throwout/release bearing in 2nd gen V6 Tacoma's is caused by a simple engineering issue. The bell housing is made out of aluminium and the bearing is made out of steel. With time the bearing will always cause gouges and marks in the pilot shaft that will cause the chirping and noise issues.

Toyota Doesn't have a fix.

Toyota will try to replace your bearing and pressure plate and 'polish' the pilot shaft but it will not help. The issue will come back again.

Toyota will replace the bell housing (because the piolt shaft on the new transmissions is not a replaceable part) this will help but the issue will come back later on down the road because it is the same part.

Replacing the transmission is always nice.... but again the parts are the same and the issue will come back.

Toyota has released a new part, an bell housing "made from different material". This is what I have been told by 3 different dealerships. I did a lot more research into it and the bell housing is infact made but it is still made from softer metal than the bearing. According to Asain the bell housing is indeed made but it still made from aluminium. So the issue will come back with the updated bell housing. I found several people online that went through this.

Do not let Toyota replace the bell housing or transmission. It's a waste of money.

There is now a steal sleeve kit made for the transmission. It is made by a company called PDM out of Thornton, Colorado. This completely solves the issue.

I have had this issue 4 times with my truck.

I went to the dealer last week for them to redo the bell housing and went armed with information about PDM and a nicely constructed letter with about 200 other users that have had this same problem. The document I delivered to Toyota corp, and the dealership was apx 150 pages. With printouts of all of the users on this forum with the issue, and other forums.

PDM had actually stopped by and talked to the shop manager about the issue last week and they had setup a billing account with the dealer.

The dealer agreed to pull the transmission from the car, install the PDM kit and a new pressure plate. Reinstall the entire thing. Instead of doing the bell housing like they originally were going to do. My cost will be $185 for the PDM kit. The rest is going to be warranted work because my throwout bearing failed after 9500 miles.

In Denver, CO 'GO Toyota and Scion' off of Arapahoe RD told me they are going to be giving there customers an option of this fix vs. doing the bell housing in similar situations. They have acknowledged the problem, and understand that the bell housing swap is not a fix. The shop ASI tech talked to me this morning and let me know that he was thrilled to see a company finally came out with this fix. He said busting open the transmission really sucks because of a huge hex nut torqued at 450 lbs.

My experience at the dealer was a great one due in part to the fact PDM has this solution.

That's what I worked out with Roseville Toyota! I plan to buy the URD kit but I guess PDM makes one or perhaps they're the same. Sucks we have to pay $200 out of pocket but better than a squeaky TOB once out of warranty.

 

Would a Short throw shifter solve this?

 

No, a short throw shifter only shortens the shift throw. It does nothing else. It will make the user feel as if the transmission shifts tighter and quicker, but really it just adjusts the throw. The Release bearing is separate.

 

Well that is some useful information, rep points to the OP. I only have 5,500 miles on my 6 spd and so I will keep this in mind so if (or when) the time comes I can solve the issue once and for all.

I have to take some small issue here; "ALL" is a pretty strong term; 48,000 on my 09 6M and nery a problem in this respect, or at all for that matter.

On a different note all together, kudos to PDM and OP for taking this on. I think it is interesting that no one seems to have seen this obvious solution earlier. I work on vehicles that are virtually all Al and anytime a harder material needs to pass thru, rotational or not, it is sleeved. Course that didn't stop GM when they designed the POS Vega line

 

Sorry to say 'All'. Let me rephrase that.. All 2005-2010 V6 Six Speed Manual Transmissions share the same transmission bell housing, meaning they all might suffer from this, depends on something. But really, nobody really knows what it depends on, so I'll just say it depends on luck.... So.... Good Luck

 

Well, this certainly still bothers me. Had I known about this problem, I certainly would not have bought my new truck last month. (I'm sure I'm not the only one, so I wonder if Toyota is aware that this problem is costing sales)

I only have 1100 miles on my 2010, so no noises yet. Hopefully a TSB and fix will be done sometime before I get close to warranty. I'm also troubled by 12,000 miles being all they'll say is wear and tear on a clutch. My last truck (and possibly my next one if this isn't addressed!) was a '96 Ford Ranger. My throwout bearing started to chirp/squeal at around 140,000 miles. I figured I was due for a wear and tear replacement of all that stuff (clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, slave cylinder) so I had it done by my local shop. We looked at the old stuff and both the mechanic and I thought they were in great shape, at least another 20,000 miles or so. There is no way you should have any problems in that area before 75000 miles, and certainly not before the 3yr/36K warranty is done. Has to be an engineering/design issue.

Hopefully the PCD fix will catch on and we'll get a TSB and a covered fix soon.

 

Sure would be nice if this became a recall so those of use that are out of warranty could benefit.

 

Rumor has it that toyota is looking into a similar solution for a TSB.

I did spend about 24 hours this weekend looking for a single truck that actually had a failure that caused the trans to fail but couldn't find one.

The TOB seems to be at most an anoyance. It sure as hell pissed me off.

 

Yeah it makes me pretty angry. I'm waiting a couple months and will be installing the URD/Sumo/PDM sleeve kit and more than likely a new clutch while I'm in there.

 

I paid about 245 for the whole kit from PDM and when I took the truck to have the rear TSB done along with my complaint of that freaking chirping noise coming from the tranny, the shitty dealer reordered the same parts. I new this would now solve the issue after extensive research done here and other forums. The master mechanic working on my truck was excited to see my PDM kit and I told him to install this along with the new clutch. He stated that this is the kit corporate needs to fix their fook up on that design. He said the the bearing would probably go out and that the sleeve will probably last forever. He was impressed on the design/work on the kit by PDM.

For those of you waiting for a TSB, I would not hold my breath. A class action lawsuit would kick toyota in the nuts and force them to see such problem they are ignoring. For the money I paid on that kit, to my is like insurance. I'd rather have it fixed now than drive around with a jacked up tranny and then toyota never release such TSB. My truck now rides like the first day I got it.

I am now looking for a PDM sticker to identify my truck so others can say that I have the tranny fixed without waiting for that shitty toyota company.

Sorry dude, I had not realized that you had just posted above with what you had done to to repair the TOB. I had just misread... Its monday.
