I'll be going back in with fill dirt, preferably something loamy like a sand soil mix, and slope it a bit so the lake we currently get after a rain goes into a drain system, like a drain system similar to a septic field. Years and years ago I used to help build septic systems, so I have a decent idea of how to accomplish what I want there.

I do have some concerns about the root systems, but really, until we start digging it all out, it's hard to tell what we're really facing there.

We'll be going back in with a couple of fruit tree and probably Leyland Cypress on the perimeter since that is what our neighbors on the good side also have for a privacy "fence". I really like how it looks around their yard.

I'm not worried about the shade, even being in the SE so much, since our power is on the old Greenwood Duke rate. My power bill rarely gets over $30 a month.

I'm no tree expert, but I believe I read somewhere that a good rule of thumb is that roots will reach out as far as the branches on the tree. But I believe it will depend on the species of tree. The arborist's will rig up block and tackle and lower sections of the tree at a time to keep the damage to a minimum. That's why the stim check will only cover a fourth of your trees, I had an old rotten oak that I had to pay to come down due to how the branches were overhanging my house and fence. It's hard to tell how much room you have in your yard, but you should be able to undercut your trees and drop them like toothpicks into the center of your yard onto your grass patch. Its difficult to tell height and depth from a picture. Once they are down, then thats where the difficult work starts, do you want stacked firewood or wood chips. If you have 40 trees, you might look at a lumber yard/mill (?). You might be able to sell most of those trees if they are straight for building material and they should give you a cut of the sale. Not sure if those companies would come down to do that in the more residential areas. Otherwise, you could rent one of those hydraulic log splitters for a week and bundle some firewood. Rent a stump grinder for another few days and go to town on your stumps. If you were to do it yourself, get yourself a 20" chainsaw and about 3 sets of extra chains unless you want to sharpen, a lot of mixed gas and lots of bar and chain oil. Your neighbors will love you for making a mess.

    Well said.

I worked for a logging company in Georgia... just taking the limbs off those trees will take a while. Don’t skimp on the chainsaw if you’re doing any of it yourself. Go to an actual Stihl dealer not the bullshit ones from Lowe’s.

I need a dead tree on my back yard taken down but I'm afraid to find out how much. :D
It's been standing there for the 10 years I've lived there and it's not that big. But it's flanked by big trees, a fence and a power line so I can't cut it down myself.

I wont be touching these. They are too big and too close to the house, not to mention just about any one of them could also hit our neighbors. I've got a couple of half decent chainsaws, and I'm not afraid to use them on the old dead cedar trees in the back yard for firewood, but this is a pro job.

Yup. The company I'm using will bring in a crew with a bucket truck for two days to do the work. I just wish I could afford to have them all taken out at once.

I had a pretty big dead oak tree leaning towards my shed that I didn’t want to cut down and smash the shed.

I called Carolina Tree Care and they wanted $300 just to drop it. That was 5 years ago and didn’t include stump removal or grinding and removing the tree.

There was a Snag behind my house in the greenbelt owned by the HOA. They got quoted like $4500 to remove it. It mysteriously dropped across the road and away from my fence during a small storm :notsure: :anonymous:

What they didn't find were chainsaw marks near the base and the stump mysteriously ground down to nothing. Unsolved mystery.

I was getting quotes of $450 to $500 per tree. That adds up really fast.
