I'd think that you'd want it to be your EDC weapon for a class like that.

The front derailleur doesn't really need much adjustment, high stop and low stop to limit travel and as long as the cable tension isn't off, you should grab 1 gear per click. If it's skipping there's a good chance the chain and possibly sprocket are in need of replacement, and that wouldn't be a bad time to replace the cables too (they stretch over time) and cassette (I change mine every other new chain or so).

One thing to keep in mind when you're looking at new bike drivetrains and comparing it to older bikes is that the newer 1x gearing has eliminated all overlapping ratios from the older 2x and 3x drivetrains. The older stuff may have more combinations but a lot of those are close enough to other combos that they're practically redundant. Poke at this for a little bit and you'll see what I mean: http://gears.mtbcrosscountry.com/#26I1I1

Not always; if I were taking it for home-defense purposes I wouldn't use my EDC. I'd opt for my usual bedstand gun instead. Same thing if I were working on my 'truck gun' skills; I'd use that one instead. All depends on what you're looking to get out of the class, really. :notsure:

I got the high and low stop down, it's the movement between clicks that's off. The bike is relatively new and I replace the twist type gear change with the trigger style ones so all the cables are new also. The shifting mechanism isn't the one that came on the bike and it seems like it's just physically allowing for more travel between clicks than what's needed. I tried adjusting the high and low stops to the extreme ends and that caused issues with grabbing all of the rear gears. As you stated in your other post, only having 2 gears up front actually seems about right, the middle one has a lot of overlap with the other 2 so I get along pretty well without it.

For the old Mongoose, you might be right on the money with things just being flat worn out.

That's fair. My answer was kind of based on the premise that those are all the same weapon.

We're building on an active school campus so my EDC is just my pocket knife these days. It's tactical though

Fair enough. But it's nice to have choices :D
Plus, it was an indirect way for a recovering gun nut to find out what he's carrying :anonymous:

Slim chance, but you can also check that the derailleur and chainrings are all tightened to spec. The front shifter should have consistent travel across brands and twist/click models, so without putting hands on it myself I'm not sure what could be causing that shifting issue.

My EDC is determined by what I am wearing, what time of year, and perceived threat level I may encounter.
For me, it's hard to conceal a 1911 with shorts and a T-shirt where a compact .380 will do.

Well, tis the season! The bikes are all out and I can get it up on a stand. I'll take another run at it and see if I can't get it working properly.

Same. My summer EDC is a S&W Bodyguard in .380. Once the clothes get heavier it moves to the Shield.

yeah this is why I’m looking to get out to a 1 by system. No front mech to deal with either weight or complexity. Hard tail is going this summer and my potential future gravel bike will either have it stock or will be a quick convert.

    I also am a S&W fan...quite by accident, as it turns out. But currently my collection includes an M&P 9, a Shield, a Bodyguard, a 22A, a 5906, and a 19-3 revolver. I've only got 3 handguns that AREN'T S&W's at this point; 2 Rugers and a Glock. :notsure:
