I haven't had any issues with my panels but I ended up ordering all new screws because I didn't want to worry about a screw getting rusted in. They are 1/4x20 1" stainless screws I ordered here
    https://www.tnutz.com/product/imperial-button-head-ss/
I also put a dab of anti seize on each one.

It was well worth the extra money. I left the heads silver because it kind of match the fake bead lock on my rims but I'm sure they could be painted black. The screws for the wind deflector on the front are 1/2" if I remember correctly and the rest are 1"

Switched to black oxide stainless screws 2 year ago. Color faded to dark bronze but no corrosion. (Photo reflection makes them lighter, actually look black from a distance) You can get them and matching washers at McMaster Carr, should be a link earlier in this thread. With Stainless no worry about future rust drips on roof. Save some money and pass on the lock washers, Not needed if you torque bolts correctly and so far none have come loose.080CBD9A-0013-4D1A-8A76-AC11A907D444.jpg

Has anyone swapped the button heads for "regular" bolts? Tnutz likes those button heads and capped bolts.

I'm trying to source some replacements in black anodized, but that take a normal 10mm socket.

Just ordered a set of maxtrax. Wanting to mount them just like this. Any better places to buy the tie down rings? Looks like they are $8.50 for two on prinsu’s website and I am sure shipping will be a lot.
*Disclaimer not my pictures. Sweet 4runner though.

I know prinsu just uses zinc bolts because it's cheaper, but I wish they would offer a stainless hardware upgrade or something. I think people would actually go for it.
The thing I hate about their design is that it relies on the threaded part of the bolt resting on the aluminum slot. If you remove the crossbars more than once it will dig into the powdercoating on the slot.
They should really source some partially threaded bolts that puts the solid shaft of the bolt on the side rail.

    Something like this:
    https://www.mcmaster.com/97763a347
These are 1.25" long with .25" unthreaded. I'm not sure if these are too long to thread into the cross bars. Does anyone know how deep the threading is?
If you add a washer and even a lock washer too, then it would be less thread going into the cross bar.

For an application like that, I use threaded machine knobs like this on a carriage bolt. You can get them at most good HW store or McMaster Carr at $2.37 each in your choice of colors plus shipping. For your proposed application, I’d be worried about it vibrating loose if there is any flexing of the Maxtrax so you may want to get one of the anti vibration knobs with a nylock feature, also McMaster Carr for about $1 each

I was thinking if I went the tie down method I could drill the screw and put a safety pin in. Might as well just buy the maxtrax pins for $50 though. Just hurts spending that much money on mounts.

END OF ROAD Original Quick Fist Clamp for mounting tools & equipment 1" - 2-1/4" diameter (Pack of 2) - 10010 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CQPANY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_s5gOEbAY83QDV

easy. Use the same bolts as the side rails attach with the black nuts. Just need to bore out the rubber in the mounts a bit.

The one who dies with the most stuff wins.
Quick fists are what I've used to mount my shovel. Don't have it on the rack, but don't see why you couldn't put them up there.

I used a wheel tray from an old Yakama bike rack. Cut into 12” length for the axe and remaining 24” for the shovel and bolted to the Prinsu bars. Found some extra Yakima wheel over center straps on EBay to hold them in place. See post 331 in The Prinsu How page for details.

Anyone running J-Bar/ J-Racks for kayaks? See a bunch of options but want to make sure they fit the bars properly and don’t scratch hem up too much.
