lol, I dunno. I've never touched a winch in my life, at least not an electric one. I can't even guarantee I could both take it apart and put it back together.

its best to buy a good winch the first time instead of having it fail when you need it...

In 20 years, you'll open it, find a single loose nut on a wire terminal, and then cry yourself to sleep.

    ^ exactly

a winch doesn’t do you any good if it doesn’t work. And when you need to use it, it needs to work.

lots of people buy cheap winches and never use them and are then surprised when they don’t work

I'm a cheap ass, but if anything, a winch is worth a splurge.

I would be curious to see how it failed. Its always frustrating when a perfectly good machine is crippled by one crappy part.

My landlord replaced my fridge for me right after I moved in because it kept thawing on me. You could hit some buttons on the front and get it to come back on and be ice cold, but in 3 days or so it would stop working again. That tells me that mechanically it was just fine, and there was something up with the controller. Maybe even something as simple as a bad temp sensor.. Had it been my fridge, that fancy pants controller on the door would have been ripped out and replaced with something much simpler, and I bet it would still work. But, it wasn't my fridge and now I have a new one.

Esp when it comes to safety and recovery gear. Buy quality, so you only have to buy once, and you make it home in one piece.

That's why we don't off-road alone yet. We don't have recovery gear. I wouldn't want to go alone until we had a radio setup and winch.

It's not so bad once you understand the will of the angry pixies stored in the battery.
