I had mine done 13 months ago. Since then I have put on 10k miles. Now its chirping :)

So now its at the dealer again...

    Good luck!

But the good news is if you had the work done at the dealer they will cover it for 12mos/ unlimited milage... per toyota.

X2. Those TSB's should be recalls. Corporate Toyota should have a department that monitors forums for complaints/issues.

I hope your dealership express what they've done to Toyota so we can all get a fix to this problem. My 6sp only has 28000 and I have heard some noises that have concerned me and the dealer just grease the problem or states it's normal. I also will be watching this thread and waiting for an official TSB or recall.

My guess is we will never actually see a recall or TSB on this issue. The reason is because of $$$$. I couldn't imagine the cost to toyota to release a bellhousing with a steel shaft. Then take the time to pull every manual transmission and slap it on. Thats 12 hours of shop time + parts * number of 05-11 Tacomas + 07 -- recent FJ's.

Save your pennies and when the wirl/chirp annoying sounds become to much for you to handle find a toyota shop somewhere in town and have them do the work for you. If you can push it to 50k+ I would. That way you can just do a clutch while you are in there.

I have spent in the neighborhood of $2000 getting this resolved because my ride was out of warrentee when the issues came up.

I have faith that this fix (PDM TSK + new pressure plate) will solve the problem.

Also, Who here has an 05 or 06 that has done the Clutch improvement feel tsb?

How much does the dealer charge to install the PDM kit?

Hey everybody, I just wanted to let everybody know that the work is done with the truck.

They ended up installing the PDM kit instead of replacing the bell housing. They also did the clutch pedal improvement feel TSB for the 05/06 Tacomas.

Total Cost was $402 for all the parts (including the PDM kit)

Toyota picked up the bill for

    New clutch pressure plate
7 hours labor for trans pull, pdm kit install.
All parts associated with the clutch improvement feel.

I paid 185 (dealer cost) for the pdm kit.
2 hours labor to do the clutch improvement feel TSB.

Truck drives and shifts SO much better.

URD short throw shifter will be here monday.

    Cheers!

Mine chirps constantly. I hate it. But not enough to pay $200 for the kit to fix it. Of course, mine started whining just after I was out of warranty.

Is the warranty for this under 3/36 or 5/60?

Clutch is 3/36 warranty. However, the transmission case (pilot shaft) is part of 5/60 warranty. Toyota bought me a clutch at 50K and almost 5 years old. The work was approved as goodwill by the regional rep. What sucks is he did not approve replacing the pilot shaft/case/bellhousing.

So I guess the answer to your question is it depends on what your regional Toyota rep is willing to do for you.

many many many owners have gone over 100K miles with not a single problem with the TO bearing.

My 2009 6 speed started chirping at idle and low speeds while in gear at 16,000miles. Took it to my local dealer and of course if wouldn't make the chirping sounds, but the service manager said he would replace the throw out bearing any time I want under warranty. He may not have been aware of the bell housing and input shaft issue. But he seemed willing to get it fixed right. If I would have known how common this issue is i would have went with the automatic!

All this only because Toyota wanted to save about $100-$200/truck by making the bell housing out of aluminum.

I hate aluminum, it's weak, resonates sound and once you take a bolt out of a threaded hole in aluminum block, most likely, you will strip the bolt when reinstalling, just by torquing it down to factory torque specifications

Yet car manufacturers would like to manufacture the whole damn car out of aluminum...:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Good info. My warranty is almost up and I dont want to foot the bill for a major repair. The service guy at the toyota dealership i go to says that previous warranty work is covered for only 1 year unlimited miles and said that its Toyotas corporate policy. Is that true?

After reading a lot of threads and searching:
Besides the chirping, are there any other symptoms I have to look for?
What are some key points I should bring up to get the dealer to work on my truck and pay for it? I have all kinds of noise from the truck so I dont know whats what and shifting first gear is tough occasionally. FYI: I've had similar symptoms because and had my clutch disk assembly replaced because of a broken disk at 25,000 miles. It started off with difficulty shfting with gears 1 and 2 and then progressed to the point that it was almost impossible to shift gears. Was I/ am i experiencing problems with the TOB or is this irrelevant?

Luckily, i'm driving my old care but I really want to take care of this and move on because I want to be back in my truck!!

    Thanks for the help.

    Super,

start by going to the dealer with a calm and mature attitude. They will try to bs you and tell you that there is nothing wrong. My truck only did the annoying chirp and it barely did it when I took it to the dealer. I had the senior/team mechanic go with me for a test drive and on the way back, it was barely doing it. He knew what it was but I got the feeling that he could not openly say that while wearing the corporate uniform. He told the service geek that he heard it and to order part. Two weeks later, the same mechanic tore my truck up and did the work. HOWEVER, I told him to keep the same POS t/o bearing and put the PDM that I bought with my own money. When he saw the PDM part, he was very excited to have seen one and he told me that this is what TOYOTA needs to put out there for all those trucks with the issue on hand. The FJs have the same headache as well. AS of today, the truck drives like the first day I took it from the dealer brand new. The mechanic told me that the PDM kit will outlast the life of the truck. Good luck and let us know how you came out. Make them aware that you know that dealers/corporate know about this issue.
