Hey guys so I’m building a rear swing out bumper with my fabricator friend at work. So far I have...

the really beefy spindle that trail gear sells

1 inch clevis for d rings

    4xinnovations latch system

4xinnovations tire mount plate and gusset

And the fold down table by front runner will be coming soon

Im planning on mounting a scepter style gas can on the back, the trasharoo will probably mount to the spare tire, and maybe some other things.

what would u guys do? I’m a first time rear swing out owner so trying to get opinions, tips, ideas before I start welding shit together lol. Thanks in advance

@GHOST SHIP put together a real nice one for another member here, and I was able to see it first hand.

@m3bassman also recently posted his that's being put together, and did something different than I've seen on other swing outs.

I run a Wilco; can take pics if you need for ideas on any of it.

Yeah I’d love some pics but don’t go out of ur way. Just trying to get a final design in my head. I have the main bumper design already pretty much figured out but it’s the swing out that keeps me thinking

It's been mentioned before, and yes the thought did occur but I think having Dan's bed rack keeps everything "tied in".

I've wheeled my truck without the bed rack multiple times only to put the bed rack on and everything fit just as it did before.

Let me dig up some pics I took when I first installed it...

I went from working 13 hours a day down to 9 so I've got plenty of extra time now lol

    You just let me know

    *Found the post*

Wilco supplies a bushing for the bottom mount; found out you use your existing tailgate screw for the bottom one hole.

Where it mounts up in the bed; a bracket is provided to sit against this part of the bed and is sandwiched between the uprights.

First upright mounted, but loosely. You'll see part of the tube protrude at the bottom. This is the same on both sides, but how do you fit the tube over both uprights and tightening the left side bottom bolt?

Mount the other bushing against the bed. This way, you can slide the tube over the already installed upright, and slide the other upright through the tube.

Takes a little bit of manipulation, but the center tube that connects both uprights needs to be centered over the mounting holes. Once you get that lined up, the rest is easy.

I'd avoid doing a spindle and do a double sheer bracket with a brass bushing instead.

Spindle setups have been known to break with weight and repeated bouncing off road

Looking forward to progress pics Ken. Let me know if you need any tips. One thing I’d keep I’m mind is how erevything will fit once loaded up. You want to keep the majority of the weight as close to the spindle as possible. That’ll prevent strain on the spindle and sag. There’s nothing more annoying that having to “lift” the swingout every time you need to close it.

yeah having some engineering background I do understand the issues with a spindle set up. Hopefully I can minimize the stress if I build it right and using the biggest spindle I could find lol. I could still change styles however a friend of mind has a swing out on a first gen and he wheels his truck pretty hard. Had the same spindle I bought for quite some time and has no issues yet.
Thanks for the tip though I may use it.

Thanks buddy I’ll post some on either my build page or IG if u wana check it out. Yeah I’m going to do some calculations of torque of each addition to the bumper using the spindle as the pivot point of course. I’m trying to think of a trick way to support the swing while closed and tight. 4xinnovations supplies a rubber stop for the swing axis but I’m trying to see if I can mount a secondary rubber support to help with bouncing. I’m thinking I’ll mount the tire over towards the spindle. The heaviest items I’d say will be a full gas can, the spare tire/wheel, and maybe if I get bold a pro eagle jack.

those are a pretty cool set up, I want to keep my tailgate but if I didn’t I’d definitely look into a set up like that. I’m pretty sure @eon_blue has one and likes it.

Don’t have any good detailed pics but rectangular and circular tubing. There’s that bolting location (where stock tail gates pivot) I was able to leave the bottom of the tubing open ended and slotted to accept hardware. So each side have 4 factory bolt locations. Gate is mounted at 4 points with polyurethane Bushings with a slight interference fit.

Nice, I follow you as well. So the deflection when you open is due to the 3/16 plate for sure. The gate itself along with the tire, creates a large moment on the pivot side. You need a strong frame to withstand the stresses.

To help reduce the moment move the tire as close as you can to the pivoting side. You could try large gusseting the 3/16. But I would recommend going with tube.

Edit: you could look at inter-grating it with your bumper.

I was also getting a lot of bed wall flex so I made these. 1/4" plate and welded. Used some more plate as a backing inside taillights pockets and also underneath the bed. Helped a lot!BRACE.jpg
