Tonneau cover with bed rack

Has anyone modified a tonneau cover to work with a bed rack? I have a Yakima outpost HD bed rack and the only compatible cover is over $2k. I was debating buying a cheap roll up cover with Velcro to make it work. Not looking for added security just don’t want stuff in my bed to get soaked if it pours (I realize it won’t be water tight if modified).

Not sure exactly what you’re asking.
But they make bed racks that are compatible with the OEM cover.
With some searching you can get both for less than a 1000.

 

Over $2K? My Retraxone XR was $1.3k.. still pricey though don't get me wrong.

The Velcro idea could work as long as you have the strong stuff. I would try out drybags first esp if rain is the only factor

 

The yakima bed rack mounts directly to the bed track - I already have the yakima rack, cross bars, etc. and want to stick with this set up - I found the rack at a REI garage sale and couldn't pass up the price

 

The Outpost HD will fit several Tonneau manufactures that have a rail system built in. UnderCover and Retrax to name a few. Prices seem to range from $900 to over $3K. Keep in mind the load rating for a track system is about 45% lower than direct install on the bed.

which bed cover is this? I have the Yakima overhaul HD(below) and have had same problem as OP- price of cover was too high

 

It is a pricey cover, Retrax ProXR manual, I do like it. Found it to be the most stable of the sliding tonneau covers with rack rail systems.

 

I'm looking to put a similar setup on my truck. Didn't realize the load rating would be affected that much but after thinking about it, it makes sense. How stable is it after bolting it all together? How much weight would you feel comfortable putting on top of that rack? Also, how watertight is the Retrax? Thanks. Looks great btw!

Once it is all tightened up it is solid, I stood on top of the deck and can shake the truck not the set-up. I would feel comfortable putting 275 to 350 lbs on the deck. So far I haven't seen any water in the bed with the cover closed but to be fair I haven't driven it in any rain and the small amount of snow it has seen the bed was dry, there are two tubes from the recoil box that I have thread through the bed drain holes. I have my recovery tools (Hi Lift jack, recovery tracks) set to add when I am ready for camping/hunting/fishing. I do not keep them on for normal driving and parking in public areas - seen too many get stolen.

The RetraxOne XR has the Same load capacity on the tracks for $600 cheaper than the pro XR.
Either way, well worth the investment- buy once, cry once!

 

Throwing this out there as wishful thinking...
Would the mounting hardware for the OEM Tacoma Trifold interfere with the Yakima Overhaul/Outpost rack mounting hardware?
I know that the Yakima Overhaul/Outpost system isn't compatible with the OEM trifold cover, but I found that the OEM cover is pretty easy to remove with a helper and I swap between that and my Softopper often.
Would be nice to just leave the Yakima track mounts in place so I could add the Overhaul hd to the seasonal mix.

 

Simple update- the system performed well for our elk hunting trip in the high country off road and in the snow with chains - meaning the rack and tonneau held up well even with over loading weight on the actual cover to get out of some weather issues.
