Ok question on the 5100 grenades... i have them in both my first gen and my second gen. What circumstances caused the epic valve failure pictured previously? So my 2nd gen i am not all that concerned about largely because it does not get much use and though i do not crawl down dirt roads with it i typically do not thrash it either. My 1st gen though i beat on like it has something to prove in all its 4cyl glory with no cage.... the set in the truck have been in there close to 8 years and have been airborne a time or two though my current problem is keeping the ass end on the ground with bone stock set up back there and no weight...

I am following this build because both trucks have fairly light weight lower control arms and mounting to the frame but i am willing to take more liberties on the 1st gen building stuff myself where as the second gen has to be a bit more researched before i will tear into it. And this whole front end set up for the 2nd gens in awesome

The day of the failure the truck was subject to about 150miles of continuous high speed (for that setup) off road varying from whoops to washes, climbs, and hard hits. They had been subject to probably 4 or 5 trips like this prior to failure as well as a handful of lesser trips.

Edit: they were about 1.5 years old and bilstein wouldn’t honor the lifetime warranty on them

Thank you but I’m not even close to builder of the year! Just trying to take the limits of the Tacoma ifs to the next level as it seems like things have kinda stalled out over the past few years. With these trucks now becoming affordable people are more willing to start really off-roading them and the suspension/steering needs to keep up

Agreed. However I still think doing a solid axle swap is cheaper at this moment. But some of us enjoy pushing ifs limits!

Is a proper solid axle really cheaper? $6k plus for a real axle, $2k for steering, $3k for shocks and then you have all the fab work. I say all this having done a proper solid axle on my 81’ ... it’s NOT cheap :)

Agreed. A proper solid axle swap is gonna be close to $10k

But a proper SAS is stronger than any Taco IFS available today.

    Hopefully you're fixing that :)

You will never be able to make one work good on a Tacoma for going fast... you can get enough up travel with the stock frame

I agree. But building a strong ifs is expensive as well. I have a little over 8500 in parts in my front and dont even have rcv axles yet. The mini I'm building I have roughly 7500 in the axle, shocks, and links. Between sales and bargain shopping you can get some good deals. A few of the guys I wheel with have done 60 swaps front and rear for about 14k including wheels and tires. But I think best bang for the buck now is to solid axle swap, but I would eventually like to see that change one day.

Agreed. One of the things missing in south east is go fast places. Only rock crawling and fire roads for us.

SAS isn't trying to achieve the same objective as focusing on an LT setup. Idk why people always make SAS seem to be the ideal end goal. Sure you get a ton of travel out of the front for crawling but you're going to have a hell of a time making it perform like an IFS at speed. It really comes down to your objective.
