Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)
Anyone have time on that 1-10 vortex with mrad and can compare it to the ATACR? Im more of an LPVO man, and the plan is it to go on my semi 308. When the 6.5 comes out that I want, Ill be getting a real scope for that.

I run a red dot on my .308 semi, I’m not the biggest fan of lower power scopes, pretty much negates the purpose, but up to 10x might be a different animal.

I’ve got a low power variable primary arms something something I picked up in a trade that I’ll likely never use.

If you get the vortex, I’d like to see a review.

@Rawdoggy you get signed up for expertvoice? You’ll save hundreds off Vortex and others.

    So much this^^

I’ve bought ALL my optics that way. Shipping time isn’t bad and the savings is awesome.

I'm curious about this expertvoice. Sounds like a way to turn instagram followers into cheap stuff.

No clue what you mean by this statement, you order from the actual manufactures like Leopold, Night Force, or Vortex (all on there). ExpertVoice is just a website that coordinates the pro deal so to speak.

Info on registering as a first responder. Military have access too. It’s also used by some retailers for their employees but I don’t know how that part works if you own a business.

They must be different per different credentials. I got nightforce, triji, vortex, Eotech and bushnell

Or leupold blocked me from talking shit about them for the last decade.

Maybe? Did they not have the option the redo the “learn” portion? Every once in awhile they will get updated or your “tests” will expire. Had that with Vortex last year, think they rolled out a new product or something. Can’t really remember now.

I’m not a big Leupold fan either, but included them for their following. It’s pretty amazing how many brands are available and pretty smart on the manufacturers part. People are only going to do the “learn” function for stuff they sell or use.

I realize now that the tone was off, but they way they pitch it it sounds like it's a way for people with a following relevant to a given industry to set themselves up with manufacturers to buy things at cost for the purpose of use/eval/review and ultimately some kind of word-of-mouth advertisement. MIL/LEO are good examples of it, if the right guy in a department tries and likes it that department is far more likely to adopt it.

    Edited to clarify

Ahhh I got it now. In a sense they do, which is really smart from a sales perspective. Most here might get annoyed by instagram douche bags but they still have a following. It’s more for the retail side. My first job after retiring was the gun counter at Cabelas. It was one of those bs joke jobs we all talked about. The idea was cooler then the job. That’s where I learned about it and really their target audience. Dudes come in to buy a scope, the sales person talks up the one they like or know the best. I think the first responder and military thing is more out of a courtesy, and because we might talk about their brands with peers and at the range.

I just looked, leupold flat out isn’t on my account. Just the ones I mentioned, plus Steiner, US optics, Zeiss and some cheap ones that I’d never buy or never heard of like LUX optics?? pretty much completes the list.
Not a problem though, leupold has a .mil program direct. You can make and account w/ credentials and their deals are actually pretty decent that way.

I'm surprised LUX is on that list, the only place I've seen them mentioned as being frontrunners is as a CMP/NRA legal service rifle optic. https://hi-luxoptics.com/products/hi-lux-across-the-course-xtc14x34-competition-rifle-scope

Recoil was manageable with the original HS Precision stock and non-threaded recessed target crown, but spotting splash was a no-go.

Things were way more tame when I started running the MDT ACC chassis, the added fore-weight helped keep things in check. I could catch splash about 50% of the time.

This should kill the remainder of the already minimal muzzle flip with the ACC and no brake. Hope is to spot more/all shots for adjustment on the fly.

Also figured I’d order a 9/16-24 to 5/8-24 thread adapter so I could use my orphan PWS FSC30 on my Alexander Arms barreled Grendel. Should make it feel like a .22lr... for me, anyone around me be damned!

Hey guys, just looking for some opinions and not trying to start a shit storm debate.
My buddy just bought this scope a few months back. Seems super nice to me and without having the knowledge y'all have on precision shooting equipment I wanted to know if there is a better bang for the buck out there?
Let's say sub $1200 scopes to narrow it down.

40x is a bit much on the magnification, I prefer 25x or less,

I heard a number of folks complain in the LRP clinics “I can see my heart beating in the reticle” my answer “turn the magnification down”

plenty of quality glass in the $1200 price range, Burris, Vortex SWFA,..

When I sighted in his gun, 30x was about the highest I turned it up. 40x is more than I would need for sure

For $1,200 you can snag a used Nightforce NXS F1 3-15x50. Great glass, turrets that track, built like a tank, customer service team that are responsive, and a lifetime transferable warranty.

If you’re Mil/LE, their discount program is awesome with a fast turnaround. Vortex and leupold also have awesome discount programs but I haven’t personally used them so I can’t speak to their turnaround times.

A bit lower than that you can snag a PST Gen 2 for around 800-1000 on Amazon and most retailers. I helped my brother piece together an R700 with their 5-25 and he really likes it. Did the same setup for a coworker but he went with their 3-15. They run their systems for hunting and rec shooting without complaint thus far. Both were FFP.

The market for scopes in that price range is turning around, for the better, lately which is resulting in more companies offering competitive products to a larger demographic.

Honestly, and this is just my opinion, for the overwhelming majority of shooters and situations, 5-25x56 or 3-15x50 is more than enough magnification range. Best advice is to not get wrapped around the magnification range but rather the tracking reputation, as in does the scope model have a solid history of tracking. If it doesn’t track, it isn’t repeatable and thus isn’t reliable. After that look at reticle designs that are offered by the manufacturer. Then it’s just a matter of picking it and boom, done. Glass is subjective (at a certain point) so don’t get too wrapped up in the marketing BS.

At $1,200 you can find quite a few optics that will fit your needs, but if you look at used, you might have the ability to step up to a better quality optic while remaining at your budget cap.

Regardless of what optic you go with, invest in a quality base and mount. Toctite, torque to spec, and pop some witness marks on the screws with a paint pen or marker. This will save yourself some depression drinking down the road lol.

    Good luck!

It seems like a good optic, but I'm going to echo what the other guys said, there are better scopes out there for generalist shooting. That scope is tuned for a specific style of long range shooting (namely F-Class) where magnification in the 40-50x range is beneficial for holding exact holds on a stationary target for maximum precision. For a generalist long range shooter I like 3-15 or 5-25 scopes, especially 3-15's. As an example, the Ares BTR GEN2 2.5-15×50 is one that I'm leaning towards picking up because the zoom range is what I'd consider perfect for targets from 100-1500 yards, the glass is good, and it has other features I like in an optic. Another competitor in that price range would be the Viper PST Gen II 3-15X44 FFP because it has a similar feature set.
