I posted 140 acres for the landowner behind my house because he asked me to do it . Some Signs go missing ,so I replaced them with a couple that say “ stop taking signs “ “ your on camera “ . Then I get phone calls from the guy that owns property on the other side of where I posted saying signs are wrong and what’s up with the notes on the signs . I know he took some signs down . Fucking scum bags

 

I'd like to know where there DNR gets it's numbers to sell licenses. Literally both sold out for both hunts.

 

DNR commissions a study that supports new or defends existing legislation (rules).
Look for wild turkey studies in your state.

There's a bunch of good info in these papers but I'm of the opinion that humans account for a very small part of the kill chain.

 

Yeah the damn coyotes, raccoons, etc. kill the majority if I had to point the finger. They snatch up young and adult turkeys and the raccoons raid the nest as well as other animals. The eggs are just easy pickings on the ground.

 

3 Toms almost crossed to my side of the road this morning. Traffic spooked them back .

 

We are supposed to get 2-4” of snow Friday night .

 

Alright so here’s the deal...

I got a chance to get back out again this morning. As I was getting ready to set up and find a spot I heard a turkey gobble probably around 100 yards on the ridge. So I set up facing towards the step off along the ridge and waited a bit.

I started to call about 15-20 mins later once it was light enough and I hear a hen (I’m guessing roosted) get all fired up and started immediately calling back to me repeatedly. At this point I heard at least 2 or 3 gobblers in the area but only 1 pretty close.

I didn’t call much because I was waiting to see what the hen would do because they call drag a gobbler with them. It took probably around 20-30 minutes for them to make their way to me. Of course they come up on the field just a big higher than me and to my right.

I had considered facing that field which was on the backside of the tree I was sitting against and I figured they would come through the brush and wood line before making it up to the field... Wrong.

To the right and behind me a spot 2 hens and the gobbler coming towards the decoys which were out in front of me about 25 yards. The lead hen kept looking at the decoys and calling and she came within 15 yards to my right but wouldn’t come out in front. The gobbler stayed just behind the hens strutting and gobbling.

It just didn’t work out but a damn close call for sure. I ended up moving to the far end of the property and called another hen in immediately but no gobbler. I just love being out there and I’m calling them in thankfully but not sealing the deal. I won’t get to go much but I may try a couple more times since it’s such a long drive from where I live. I did get the encounter on GoPro but my wife was on the furthest side of the tree so no visuals just the sounds of the turkeys. Still lots of fun!

Youth day opener

 

Wifey got it done this weekend. Luckily the other Tom that was with hers hung around long enough for me to get a shot!

 

Well ,hurt my back yesterday can barely walk . Did the same last year and it took about 2 months to get back to normal . Opening day is next Friday . Needless to say I’m fucking not happy .

 

We can all pitch in and get you a camo walker. Just kidding. I really hope you get better soon. Hopefully you can get a chance to get after em once the back stuff subsides.

We can shoot two, so I have another tag to fill starting tomorrow morning.

Back is feeling a lot better .Still moving slower than usual but it’s not stopping me from doing too much finally . Shot 4 different shells patterning the gun this morning. Winchester XX 3” #5 shot works for me. Same every year .

 

Weather has birds shut down around here . Normally I see and hear birds around my house all season . Rain and damp almost 6 out of 7 days a week for as long as can remember right now . Opening day Friday May 1st looks the same . Guess I will be up early Friday watching the radar .

 

I haven't seen any on my way to work this season, usually see them in the fields.
