Really. Thats your reasoning? You think Ford would be any better? Your truck is fine. It just had a few metal shavings that were caught up in a sensor somewhere. Those metal shavings happen probably on any engine out there. Toyota was at least honest about it. Its not like this issue is going to drastically affect your engine and reduce its life by half just because some little metal shavings were found. I take it you've never pulled an engine oil pan before lol .

It's like a murder investigation right? I think it was contaminated from the 1st startup. Top to bottom machining junk.

Since it’s Friday, I’ll throw in my opinion about the “extended” warranty.
You almost never get an extended warranty unless you have a physical failure.
The chances you get a warranty is higher based on how catastrophic the failure was.

Depending on how you look at it,

You were were unfortunate that you experienced a “problem”.

Or, you were fortunate enough to not have a hard part failure and experience a catastrophic event.

It’s just the way it operates in the corporate world.
And in most of life as well. At least for me anyways.

Maybe, I had a similar issue with a brand new Subaru in 2009. I had a discussion with the district manager and simply told him that yes, I’m getting the warranty for free but he’s telling me not to worry about future problems, so why does he seem worried. I was given a free full extended warranty on the spot and it was a good thing I had it.

After I purchased my 2019 I did fluid checks on everything right after I bought it and found small metal particles/shavings at the end of the dipstick and assumed the worst. I went into the dealer and they inspected & verified the oil shavings and spoke to Toyota about the issue and was determined to be normal break-in debris. Oil was changed for me and then I did another oil change at 1000 miles and the metal debris in the filter was significantly less and made the decision at that time to stick to the normal 10k oil change intervals. Currently at about 12k and my motor has operated flawlessly. I performed my first 10k oil change about 2 months ago and hardly any particles were present. Also, at the time when I brought my truck into the dealer I walked around with the service director and he checked six new tacomas on the lot and they all had the same debris on the dipstick.

Unfortunately, I think you got unlucky and some shaving/debris made it to the vvti solenoid or something and caused a problem. I am betting your motor is fine and you have nothing to worry about. I believe this is normal break-in debris and you should hopefully be fine from this point on, but I do recommend you change the oil again at about 1000 miles. I will say that I doubt buying a Ford will help :).

Well, my 2003 4Runner got a new transmission at 21000 miles, my 2011 4Runner never had an issue. Hoping this is more like the latter.

Update, I had appealed Toyota’s decision not to extend my warranty. They just called and have decided to extend the power train warranty to 6 year/ 100K miles.

Bad things can happen to any brand. I’ll never buy a Ford because I was raised in a Chevy family. LOL I’ve had two lemons in my life so far. A VW GTI VR6 and a BMW 550i. Shit happens. My wife is on her 4th Tahoe in her life and we’ve had 0 issues. We’ll probably buy a 2021 in the Fall because of the new design. Most new cars are pretty reliable these days. Now go try driving and maintaining a car that’s 50-60 years old! Hell I’ve spent over $10k in the last year on my 89 911. That just to get it reliable.
