JL Audio Speakers and Sub

OP do you recall your C1's taking a few hours of playtime to break in?

Forgot to ask what your audio source is. I play purchased mp3 which gives way more sound production than radio, Spotify or other radio apps. CDs also sound better than the radio.

Can confirm that sound deadening the doors, back panel behind rear seats, and roof blocks out a good deal of road noise. Still getting some wind noise through the door cracks around the weatherseal (especially at highway speeds). Any ideas on how to minimize the air getting in through the weather seal?

Note: was pleasantly surprised to see that the truck's whole floor came sound deadened from factory..maybe as part of the JBL sound upgrade?

 

Was it hard to fit the jl tweeter to the factory bracket?

@kimw880 thanks for your review of the JL C1-690s. I have an AC and have been considering getting those to match my JL 8 inch Microsub+. I've also been looking at the Focal IS 690s because they are plug and play but they are twice as much.

 

Read up on how important the vapor barrier is. I highly recommend having it. You can cover the holes to keep moisture out or just skin the entire door. At the bottom of the doors you will find drain holes to release the condensed moisture so don't worry about sealing the door. It will drain out. If not, the inside of your truck is going to absorb any moisture.

I have the JL C2-650 up front and the JL C2-650x in the rear with a JL stealthbox. I went over board with JL and bought thier twisted pair RCA cables. JX 400 driving doors and a JD 500 for the sub. It took a minute to fine tune the filter, gain and bass boost. I ended up adding the remote gain knob too. I think most people would be happy with stock speakers if they used sound deadening. My floor had the factory sound deadening on a non JBL system. I think the floor sound deading is standard on 2nd gens.

Definitely don't seal those drain holes at the bottom. You'll never be able to totally seal a door because of the windows anyway. They will allow some moisture in and when it condenses into droplets its only escape is those holes at the bottom. Best to treat a 'sealed' door like an aperiodic membrane as expectations are concerned.

 

I think you misunderstood my statement. I did not say to seal the drain holes. I explained the condensation would combine into droplets and drain out. The drains are absolutely necessary and so is a vapor barrier on the door and the pic i saw from someone did not have a vapor barrier. And I bet adding the vapor barrier will alleviate the noise as high speeds.

Does the crossover for the C1-690 tweeter fit in the 3rd gen OEM tweeter compartment? If not, where did you guys put it?

 

I have a 2ndgen and it fit but should fit 3rd gen just fine. The jl tweeter is quite small

 

You'll need a couple back strap brackets though, or custom tweeter brackets, but the back straps are perfectly fine and not visible after install

Sorry, I misread your question asking about the crossover specifically. No it won't fit in the tweeter compartment, but you can zip tie it basically anywhere behind the door panel a few inches away from the tweeter...

 

Thanks. I have a 3rd gen so the stock location is on the dash. JL also recommends not mounting the crossover in the door due to the possibility of moisture, perhaps CYA?

 

I’ve got the coax version of the C1 690’s in my door and they do sound great. They are even better with some power behind them and work great with my Key Amp.

I wish I had done the extra bit of wiring and just did the component version but I had already purchased the Subaru kicker tweets. Might still change them out, the front stage is a bit bright and harsh.

 

Does the box slide around when you are driving?
