Your correct, they all serve a purpose. I'm not overly fond of poisonous snakes, but if you don't fuck with them, they won't bite you most of the time. There are exceptions to this rule, there's one rattlesnake that will bite you and then rattle the alarm signal. sidewinder maybe, I forget. Only venomous snake that I've ever seen aggressive is a Cotton Mouth. Copper Heads can be sneaky bastards also, they camouflage themselves very well. I always look on the other side of a dead fall tree before I step over it.

There is not one species of rattlesnake that bites first and then rattles. There are certain percentages of each species within certain genetic populations that don't choose to rattle from a behavioral standpoint as the first line of defense. Evolutionary prior to rattlesnake hunting and depredation by humans, rattling would serve as a warning and protect the snakes. With us however, rattling a moderate to high percentage of the time, especially in certain localities, leads to humans knowing where they are and as a result we kill them. Therefore the percentage that chooses the cryptic behavior instead, staying still and quiet, have had higher survival rates and are passing on those genetics which over time have a higher frequency in the overall gene pool of that locality. Basically the advantage of rattling to not get stepped on by large ungulates or eaten by mammalian snake predators is not necessarily an advantage when dealing with humans that kill the snakes for sport or safety of their livestock and family (no judgement here).

Plus, rattlesnakes only bite if in fear. So they wont pursue us, but if we step within biting range well ....
95 % of bites are of people who pick them up (usually drinking, usually men), mountain bikers a couple percent, hikers another couple percent who literally step on them or step or place their hand within inches of them, etc... I use to do rattlesnake removal so was up on the statistics back then. I presume they are the same now.

I do know that water moccasins/copperheads, who are closely related, will pursue threats in an offensive-defense behavior.
