Had a diamondback literally inches from my ankle while checking cams a couple seasons ago.
He was lit up for 5mins while I pulled the sd card, thought he was in an old stump a few feet away.
    Nope.
Finished with the cam, looked for him and BAM!
Could have easily hit me, had every excuse to, but didnt.

Those light green ones are about as rare as the mountain king snake I saw.
Last one I remember challenged us for a water hole while we were taking a break...we let him have it.

    Thanks for that.

There are a few towns in PA that have "Rattlesnake Roundups" or hunts.
It's mostly just an excuse to have a big beer blast.
I can't say I approve... the beer is A-Okay, but the Rattlesnake killing...eh.

None of that kind of thing near me.
In my experience, Timber Rattlers around here are pretty docile.
Maybe it's because they're up in the mountains, and it's rocky AF up there.
The rocks /boulders soak up a lot of heat.
Plus all the overhead cover and thick Laurel Hells, and cold springs.
I think they're a little sluggish because it takes them so long to get really warmed up. :notsure:
Even in August, it's a bit chilly in the morning in the mountains.

I remember when I lived in SC, the closely related "Cane Cutters" had a very different reputation.

Anyway, I've walked past Rattlers before that never rattled, and I just happened to spot them.
I'm sure I've walked right past many more and been none the wiser.
Though they've often given me a low rattle, kind of a buzz, if I've gotten within 6 feet or so.

I have to say, I dislike Copperheads.
They won't get out of the way, lots of times, and I've stepped on them.
    In heavy boots, thankfully.

Here, you gotta go looking for Rattlesnakes in the mountains...
...whereas Copperheads are quite likely in your landscaping or in brush on the edge of your property.

Except for that time a baby Rattler was on the carport and the cats went nuts.
I've told this story before, but hey.

Mrs Gritto: Take care of that little snake on the carport.
Me: Aw, is my wifey afraid of an itty bitty snake?
Her: Just do it. I don't want the cats bringing a dead snake in here.

    I go look...

Me: Shit, it's a baby Rattler!
Mrs Gritto: Aw, is my hubby afraid of an itty bitty snake?
    Me: [grumbles]

Plan B: 5 gallon bucket and a broom.
Then off into the woods to relocate the itty bitty snake.

Long time ago when the kids were little they all came in and woke me up off of gy shift.

Gf at the time says " what kind of snake is white and black and white and black and thissssss long"
Stretches her arms as far as they go with the kids all doing the same thing.

    I said "how long"?

    They all do it again.

I'll get up for that, show me where you last saw it cmon!!!

Biggest king snake Ive ever seen.
