Our resident expert can correct me if I'm wrong. But I've been told the younger, smaller snakes venom is more potent. I personally just avoid them all and let God sort them out. I don't kill them. Roadrunners and barn owls have to eat too.

Maybe someone else has some snake stories.

I don't mean to give the impression that poisonous snakes are all that common here.
They aren't.
In fact PA as a general rule prohibits the killing of Timber Rattlers. (Dunno why they allow those hunts).
They aren't plentiful.
But I'm old and have spent a lot of time in the State Forest.
So I was bound to encounter some now and then.

Now Copperheads, on the other hand, are more common that I'd like.

 

I don't think it's more potent. I believe it's just a lack of self-control and they just keep injecting.

I wont take anybody to a den I know of but I could take you to a place I could almost guarantee you a rattler in a weekend of looking.

My go to when I do is orange soda and sprite mixed mmmmmmm

 

Vodka mixes a lot better with either one.
I like the Dreamsicle ice cream bars but they don't sell them here anymore. So one day I get a bright idea to make a vanilla ice cream and orange soda float. Another bad idea.

 

Tiffany is right. Potency/mL is the same, but youngsters have not obtained the control of volume release yet. Or not necessarily, obtained, but some inject way more than needed and their chances of survival decreases as a result. It takes a long time to create the venom so when one injects several "bites" worth in one bite for defense, it may be all out of venom for hunting and less likely to successfully hunt and survive the following year.

Oh, and PSA: snakes are not poisonous (something we ingest), they are venomous (something injected).

I'm not silly enough to think I'm the only one who found them.
But I'm keeping my mouth shut.

There are guys who would recklessly kill all the Rattlers near a den site when they first come out from hibernation.
