I started brazilian jiu jitsu to lose weight too...it grew into much more for me because I ended up loving it and it serves as a great stress reducer for me. I say go for it, I have fun choking and tossing people:)

...I will add that it is way more work than what it looks like.

i'm not sure how active you are or how much you weigh. but if you're pretty overweight and out of shape, a fight club might be like stepping off into the deep end. not slapping you in the face, but speaking realistically. if you've never done anything like an organized sport or anything, you might be biting off more than you can chew. heck, even people that have done sports all their lives would find one of those classes difficult. i know you probably think it's your dad or something talking, but "it's harder than it looks." you might wanna just sign up for a gym and start lifting and running some. then work up to that, cause it's gonna kick your ass no matter who you are. seeing that you mentioned football, you may have an active/athletic past and this may not be too huge of a deal. but like i said, it's gonna kick your ass no matter who you are.

haha yeah, i am overweight but i do workout everyday on cardio. i played football year before last. and then had a bad ankle injury and gained lots of weight and this year didnt wanna play because i hadnt gotten back into shape and our team went 0-11 last year. so now i wanna lose that weight and get into a more athletic tone for football. basically i want it to kick my ass. because thats the only thing thats going to help me haha. btw im not a quitter

^ ah yes, I remember my first day....gassed and breathing after just 3 minutes of rolling....top it off with vomiting lol.

And that's that I had an athletic background. Football, wresting, and baseball and it STILL didn't help.

This is a whole different beast.

    The teacher in me:
I have been into martial arts (19yrs) for most of my life, I teach Aikido, Judo and karate. I think it is a great form of exercise, as well as teaches confidence. I don't reccomend a fight club type. I find that teaches more violence than the art, it also doesn't allow you to experience everything it has to offer. I'm not saying it isn't good just that there is so much more to it than just the violence. The best martial artist I have ever met weren't in the ring. This is a lifestyle for me not just a sport/hobby.

Now for the regular me. If you don't try it you'll never know. Why not try it? Worse case scenario, you lose a months worth of money $80, the training wears you out and you get your butt kicked. The bright side you know what your made of. On the flip side you may find something you love doing. I vote go for it.

i was an LB all my life growing up until jr. yr of high school. there, i moved down to DE and played that through high school and now in college. and idk, most of the stuff you learn in these classes will get you 15 yards and an ejection in a football game, lol.

X2 about fight clubs. Most of the young guys around here think they are hot shit because they are in a "fight" club.

I learn brazilian jiu jitsu from a branch of Marcelo Cavalcanti...MCBJJ. I train with him once or twice a month since we are a satellite location of his school and travel south to meet him.

Either way, if you go traditional or not, you'll still improve your physical limits.

i say go for it man i have tried it before but never had to cash to keep doin it.

i will tell you this its gonna be ALOT of work it is gonna kick your ass, the most intense sport i have ever done was wrestling. that shit was ridiculous every year we would start out with like 30-50 new people by the end of the week we would have maybe 3 or 4 new people haha.

so my buddy and i went to "Jacksons" im sure you guys have heard of it if you watch UFC. well they offer (idk if they do now but 4 years ago they did) like 3 or 4 "free" classes to decide if you want to join.

well my buddy and i went that shit was even more ridiculous than wrestling haha. i effin loved it but i just didnt have the cash to continue and i wish i did but what can you do. anyway just try it man might as well got nothin to lose except 80 bucks but fuck it. but once again and like everyone else said its alot of work but alot of fun too haha
