Had a rough drive today. I had been having vibration issues with the single piece driveshaft I had made. It was right in the edge of the maximum length. I was getting on the interstate and pushed it too hard and the driveshaft bent in the middle and dismantled the transfer case and exhaust on it's way out. It also highfived the gas tank on the way...

I was on the way back from picking up a stock rear section to go back to a two piece setup...

Jesus! It must have been making all sorts of wild noises when all that went down.
Was that all transfer case, or did it take out the transmission too?

It's hard to really say what I heard 1st, but looking at the damage, I feel like the driveshaft bent in the middle first. That took out the gas tank and probably mashed the exhaust. With in a second (maybe less) I believe the rear of the tcase basically shattered, allowing the output shaft and all the parts attached to fall to the road. That's what the exhaust was really assaulted. I knew I was in a jam and started to move over to the shoulder, but that when the driveshaft turned 90* to the truck and stopped the pinion from spinning. That lasted long enough for me to fish tail 2 or 3 times. The last time I was really fearing that the next time would start a barrel roll. Luckily for me, the main part of the driveshaft pulled off the splines and freed the axle to spin again. I also count it a blessing that neither the fuel line, or the brake line was damaged. Both run right past the output shaft of the tcase.

I haven't dont anything tonthe truck yet except check the pinion on the rear diff for play. It has no in or out play, but some side to side. I will probably pull it out and have it checked by ECGS since they are local to me. The transmission appears to have been spared.

Ultimately, it sounds/felt like a bad vibration, that suddenly amplified by 100. Followed closely by a loud bang and longs of grinding and pounding. The. Some tire sliding and relative silence. It was all over within a few seconds. I was just a few feet past the end of the on ramp when I stopped the truck and shut it and thanked the Lord.

I got a replacement tcase and gas tank today. Went back with the multi mode case again. I'm saving my money for possibly having this 9.5" elocker diff rebuilt.
