    Looks like Monstaliner?

Did you spray or roller the body?

    Brush the jambs?

Will you pull the topper and bed to do the back of cab / front of bed?

Inside of bed with a contrasting color?

    Looking good.

Yeah was monstaliner tinted with moderate quartz. Brushed the jambs, pulled the canopy and painted the whole thing right.

Hey man i got a 96 tacoma and looking to do the same thing. Did u roll on the monstaliner or did u spray? I just ordered the samples from them, any lessons learned that you can talk about that might help me with the install. I also have a camper shell, howd u do it with that and do you have more pictures of the truck? Thanks

Dude I have a ton of lessons learned about this. I rolled it on, which I found to be very easy to apply. I can't honestly imagine spraying this shit, seems like it would clog the gun repeatedly. For the camper, they're typically secured to the bed with four bolts that come off and should allow you to lift it up and off the bed. I sanded my canopy down while it was still on the truck and then transferred it onto three tires to get it off the ground while painting it.

Like other have said in this thread, the biggest indicator for success is the prep- sand everything down a few days in advance, don't tape until the day of the job and do one coat at a time. Remove the tape between coats and as quickly as you can to avoid screwing up the paint.

For supplies, it's good to buy extra rollers from monstaliner with the same texture, buy a few extra paintbrushes and some MEK substitute, some extra nitrile gloves, and have tons of rags around- this shit gets everywhere and the MEK will dissolve messes you made easily on the day of application. Do one panel at a time, work from inconspicuous areas to conspicuous areas, and for God's sake do the door jambs- it's a pain in the ass but will look a lot better in the end.

Finally, although the first coat went on like a dream, my second coat of monstaliner had a bunch of chunks of shit in it and was so bad that I couldn't dissolve it with MEK or anything else I tried. Had to sieve it and even after that there was a bunch of gritty looking shit that got through and pretty frustrated with it. I've contacted monstaliner about this and have hears absolutely nothing back from them, which im hoping is just due to the current circumstances. anyway, just fyi their quality control seems iffy to me at this point.

Did you mix a new batch for your second coat, or did you try using what you have left over from the first? It's possible, if you were using the same mixed batch, it could have started to flash off giving you the clumps. Have you tried sanding down the areas that have the chunks in it? You can touch it up once you get it smooth. Also, make sure to switch out the rollers often. Using light pressure helps in making the rollers last, but they will eventually start breaking down and leave chunks.

Yeah so the way monstaliner works is you add a catalyst to the tintable paint and it causes the solution to harden over 6-10 hours. So if you space two coats out you have to mix two separate gallons which I did. Thus, this seems to be a quality control issue since the first coat went on like a dream.

That's weird...Mine didn't do that. Did you use a clean bucket to mix the second batch?

Lol dude I did everything the exact same both times. Meticulously. I'm not here to troubleshoot this problem because it was obviously a bad second batch of paint. The only difference in my approach was the raw materials I used. Just want others to be aware that they may encounter this problem.

Considering my fender and hood need paint, only primed replacements after a backhoe humped my truck, this is on my to do list. Did you sand it down to metal? Does it need to be primed or does it stick to existing sanded paint? Gonna roll it, like you did. Amazing job, well done

I didn't have to sand it to metal- I just went through the clear coat and it stuck just fine. In fact, the only place I primed were sections that I sanded to metal because of rust I found.

I realize this is dated but was hoping you could tell me how this stuff brushes on. I’m assuming the rollers is what gives it the texture, could you post a pic of the door jambs? I just noticed rust coming through my paint in spots and this is my solution rather than a 3k + paintjob. Thanks

Sure thing man can post some pics of the door jambs tomorrow. The kit of monstaliner comes with a roller applicator and disposable covers. I ordered two extra since I had a buddy helping me and i read that the covers breakdown with use. In my experience, the covers definitely broke down, so paying the extra 5-6 bucks for a few extras was well worth the money. In terms of brushing it on, I bought a handful of foam brushes from HD for cheap as well as a paintbrush that came in the monstaliner kit. You end up having to dab it on rather than brush it on, but it looks pretty good overall and not significantly different than the parts I used the roller on. There are some spots that are a bit sloppy inside the door jambs, but it's very hard to see and I after a while I ran out of gas lol.

Thank you, also, what’s the working time with this stuff, I’m hoping it’s available in quarts. One panel at a time....
