I've noticed most of the local distilleries are getting shelf space at a lot of places in the Omaha area. I don't know how far out they're reaching yet.. all are fairly new within the last several years.

Doesn't look like they can ship to Texas but Michigan is on the list!!

I haven't opened this one up yet but I'll let you know when I do!

I did sample the other rum I picked up that's finished in whiskey barrels and made from molasses.. it was tasty... Ended up mixing it with orange flavored mountain dew :crapstorm:

Pretty much for aesthetics. I had the whiskey glasses from my wedding and have always wanted the matching decanter. Now that I have it, it's a good excuse to buy a handle of Buffalo Trace to keep it filled.

Beside a fancy bottle, my guess is he was saying the air opens the flavors nicely for him. That's the only thing I can think of. I like Willet Pot Still so much better after letting the air open it up but I can't tell any difference with many others.

Some decanters aren't 100% airtight, so it does allow for some oxidation. It definitely lets the whiskey open up a bit over time.

Finally trying the EH Taylor Single Barrel. Initial impression is it’s wayyy smoother than the Small Batch, that’s for sure. But I remember Small Batch always being a bit potent on the first pour. Definitely gets better after sitting a while. Going to let both sit for a few weeks now that they’re past the shoulder and do a proper comparison.

Got it from one of my local chains, Longhorn Liquor. Their 2019 BT barrel pick. It's good stuff!

Just stumbled on the end of a documentary called Bourbontucky, saw the last 20 min or so but I will need to see if I can find it to watch the whole thing. Seemed like what I saw was mostly about the recent bourbon boom but I'd be curious to see what the rest was about too.

The theory is that some whiskies benefit from having some oxygen introduced; it can mellow the front-end burn a bit and let more of the flavors show up. Decanting them introduces that oxygen. Which whiskies benefit from it is up to you, though.
From a practical standpoint, it doesn't have nearly as much effect on the booze as it does when you decant wine, but it is still noticeable. And a lot of it is theater, too. Having a nice matching cut decanter/glass set (I don't have one :notsure: ) is obviously fancier than a mixed bag of glasses, regardless of the minor effect on the booze itself.

That too. This aspect of it appeals to the cheap bastard in me

But it doesn't really apply to company; our freeloading friends mostly like rums and beer, fortunately. My dad likes whiskey, but I don't have a problem sharing the good stuff with him. :notsure:
