Anyone have the dealer swap tires at purchase?

I searched to try to find an answer to this, but never came across anything. If it's been discussed before, please point me in the right direction.

I'm supposed to be picking up my new 2020 TRD Sport next weekend, unless I can find a day to take off work, though that doesn't look promising. I noticed in the pictures that it has the Toyo Open Country A30 tires. I had these on my 2016 TRD Sport and they were terrible. Like hot garbage. So I know I'm going to be replacing the tires soon. I've checked Discount Tire Direct and it would be $672.00 for 4 tires and then tax and whatever it will cost to have them mounted, balanced, etc. The dealership that I'm buying the truck from has one of those buy 3 get the 4th for $1 promotions going on and you can select from the tires they offer online. I've been eyeing the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 as a good all around tire for me and it's eligible for that promotion. Total cost, mounted, balanced, etc., would be $593.00 plus tax. I'm tempted to do this so that it'll all be taken care of by the time I pick up the truck.

My question is, has anyone on here went this route and had the dealer swap the tires? Did you try to add it to the price of the truck? Or did you pay for it separately (which was my plan, since we've already settled on truck price, trade, etc.)? If you had the dealer swap the tires, did you get any credit for the take offs? Any reason not to do this?

I'm just looking for some additional info to see what others have done. I know I can't be the only one to contemplate something like this, so I'm hoping others will share their experience.

 

I doubt they'll go for it, but it never hurts to ask.

I made the dealer take the tires off my trade and install it on the new truck - I hated the street tires on the sport also. They were hesitant on even doing that much until I pointed out that the truck about to go on their resale lot would have a brand new set of tires...

 

Financing tires? I'd wait and pay cash. Dealer should have no problem with the swap. You'll just have to pay mount and balance if you buy them elsewhere.

Discount Tire gave me $45 for each of the Toyos I traded in for a new set of Bridgestone street tires. My 2020 Sport was 1 day old when I purchased the tires at Discount.

 

Most people can get 300-400$ for take offs. Just sell them privately.

Also, have them remove the chin spoiler it will look better and show off the new tires.

 

When I traded my 2018 in on my loaded 2019, I had them move the BFG KO2 AT with less than 7000 miles on them over to the 2019.

 

I bet the dealer would install tires free if you said you bought tires for it and want them to swap them before you take delivery of the truck. Would save the mounting fees and then like someone said sell your take off tires for $300-400.

 

Dealer tech here. I've changed tires to what the customer wanted on used vehicles that sales sold with sales paying for the tires and labor.
What I have seen is sales will pay for some stupid things to get a sale, tires are the least of those stupid things.
I don't know how well that would work with new vehicles though as service could see a possible problem with warranty tire issue down the road, unlikely but something that could possibly occur to service.
I should be clear that sales keeps the take off tires if there were new and could be used on another vehicle. For example sales keeps take off tires from Tacoma so they can be installed on a different used Tacoma they get traded in that needs new tires.

 

Yeah, I was planning to pay for them either way. I didn't know if it was easier to just add it to the cost of the truck and then pay the extra with my down payment. I definitely won't be leaving the balance on there to finance.

Did you have to push for them to do that or anything? I checked on some tires a little while back and when I asked about them buying my old tires, it was more of maybe they could do, but they never gave a clear cut answer.

 

Tell them the tires are trash and you can't leave with them on it. What are they gonna do?

 

General curiosity, do you know if Discount Tire the company bought the old tires from you or did a employee there buy them from you? Like I would have no problem paying a customer $180 cash for four newish tires.

 

I had thought about that too. But I figured if I bought them separately, maybe it wouldn't be an issue? It would be nice to get some kind of credit for the takeoffs. I could do like others suggested and sell privately. Sometimes that can be a hassle though.

I've already been debating the spoiler in my head. I still have my TRD Pro skid plate, so I may want to put that on there.

 

I don't see any issue with buying the truck then rolling straight to service and paying for new tires and keeping the take offs for you to sell or seeing if a tech at the dealer would buy them from you, be prepared to get way less then market price though, I personally wouldnt pay a customer more then $50 per tire for tires I didn't pick out that I don't yet need.

That's what I would ask for as well.

It's how I got tube steps for my truck. Told them my price and what I wish it had. Worst they can do is say no.

 

Dealers swap out wheels/tires all the time. Just ask. Worst thing they will say is no.
Just keep in mind that the truck the dealer paid for came with those tires and it's not as simple as just exchanging. It won't be for free unless they really need to make a sale, but they should give you a very good price.

 

Discount accepts new car take off tires as a trade in towards a new tire purchase nationwide. I have traded in tires from my new vehicles at Discount for years.

I do not want to deal with the hassle of selling my take off tires or storing them in my garage.

 

I did but it was a condition of sale. I only paid an upcharge for the tires.

 

Dealer offered me $25 each for the takeoffs. They also wanted more than $200 over what Discount wanted for the K02’s.

Went to Discount, paid $200 less. Sold takeoffs on Craigslist for $350.

 

When I bought my 2015 new they removed the Rugged Fails Tires and gave me full retail value for them toward the tires I had wanted.
