About to pull the trigger on a 2020, looking for advice

Any difference in noticeable power is due to gearing. The MT has a final axle ratio of 4.3. The AT has a final axle ratio of 3.91. Also the MT gears are generally geared lower. The MT is geared 3.98, 2.02, 1.32, 1.00, .85, .71 respectively from 1st through 6th. The AT is geared 3.60, 2.09, 1.49, 1.00, .69, and .58 respectively from 1st to 6th. If you multiple the final axle ratio of both transmissions to the associated gears 1st through 6th you’ll see how much of a difference there really is.

 

I guess I lucked up. My local dealer had 3 MTs on the lot. However, when I looked across a larger regional area using autotrader or cars.com, the MTs were harder to find with usually just 1 at a random dealer.

I love my 2020 TRD OR MT. It is different than a lot of other manuals I have driven but overall I'm glad I bought it compared to what I felt in the autos. I don't think I could've kept a 3rd gen auto after having a 1st gen auto. The throttle is a bit strange compared to other manuals. I'm hoping vF Tune will help solve some of this, but you do have to really press the throttle and before you actually need it with the delay or hesitation. I'm only at 3k on this Tacoma and sometimes I'll still be a little jerky going from 1st to 2nd. 2nd is fine in most parking lots, but too high to start from, but if your're giving it hell you can run up to 60-65mph in 2nd lol. It's a very nice shifting transmission though and is fun to drive.

 

That's good to know. I'm waiting for my AC MT Sport and I have a 1st Gen AT as well that I'll be selling once the Sport arrives. I'll drive the MT for a bit before deciding if the ADM removal or vF Tune is necessary.

 

Find one with the factory LED's

 

The transmission is fine. Many of the common issues with the Tacoma seem to be somewhat overblown.

 

Coming equipped LEDs was a requirement for me - not having them was a dealbreaker, and I'm glad I stuck to my guns. They really are great.

 

Is there a certain color you’re looking for?

 

As a mechanic who has driven all kinds of cars, trucks, and suv's.... and owned a pile of them too, I have come to this conclusion.... buy what YOU want. I went for a 2020 OR manual in access cab trim for a few reasons. Less electronics, more box room, and the ability to drive a truck the way I want. For towing, city driving, or take offs and stopping, I choose the gears, rev match the engine, and get to be in control. That is my opinion, hope it helps. (save the manuals)

 

You must be in Canada if you got an OR ACMT.

Correct on that. Ontario Canada. When I researched EVERY model and configuration, and understood the options, I thought I had learned a thing or two.... then I found out all y'all in Merica have a different twist on the options list! Crazy how that works!
