Everyone of my vehicles I swap the tires for better ones at purchase. Ive also gotten money back for the new take offs towards the new ones or towards the purchase price of vehicle. Done it for the last 10+ years

    Laugh.

And ask what you'd like to buy.

Been in a dealership the last few months? They'll probably offer you 6.

Understood there is a new level of flexibility (desperation?)

Point was telling them their 'tires are trash and you can't leave w/them on it' just bully talk, not the way to get it done.

Something like 'I want to upgrade my tires to brand xxx, which I see you carry and have on sale. What kind of deal will you cut?' would at least get a reasonable conversation.

In the meantime, having shopped around and knowing what you can do at the tire store down the street or online will give you numbers to compare their offer too.

OP, keep in mind that tire stores will often include lifetime rotations, balancing and an upgraded hazard warranty. Those are valuable things a dealer may not offer. But are worth asking about, if you are the kind who likes to have dealer services.

I'm traveling to pick up this truck, so I won't be using them for normal services or anything like that. That's a good point about some of the services offered by the tire shops. The only reason I was considering going ahead and getting the tires installed by the dealer was convenience. I could have the tires I want on it and ready to go when I pick up the truck and not have to find time to go get the tires swapped. The overall price was a bit less than I could find elsewhere as well.

I really appreciate all of the responses so far! Lots of good info!

I have a couple of new questions that I'm hoping you all might be able to help with.

If I were to have the dealer install the new tires and bring the old tires back, will 4 stock Toyos lay flat down in the bed under the tonneau? I know the tonneau folds up, but I wasn't sure if I might be able to fit them under there laying flat.

My next question is do I stick with the stock 265/65-17 size or go up one size to 265/70-17? The stock size Nittos are 38 lbs each, so only 2 lbs more than the stock Toyos. Going up a size would increase it to 40 lbs each, so 4 lbs different. I'm really torn about this part. Pros? Cons? Personal experience one way or the other?

Thanks again for the info guys!

I negotiated the priceof the truck first. Then had them throw in a $500 "we owe" for tire replacement. Took the truck to the local shop to change thetires. Sold the take offs with 500 miles on them for $250.

Dealers will gladly throw in a $500 we owe to close any deal. Never have had one say no.

Did the same thing this year on my 2020 Pro. Dealer gave me credit for the original tires and put 265/75/16 KO2s on it before delivery. I just had to pay the difference when I picked the truck up.
