Most use HAM radios. Legally you need to be licensed to broadcast using them.
To get licensed, you go take a federally-mandated test if you pass you are assigned a unique callsign.
...yes, I'm licensed, as are many others in the area and in this thread.

I see a nice recovery strap there. Who got stuck? :boink:
    Mmm... Ham.
^^^what this jerk said :p...and the ham cram is relatively easy. No studying. You just get a booklet with the questions and correct answers and memorize the hell out of it. If your short term memory is decent, you're good.

@OneGiraffe @Twizted thanks for the info. Never heard of HAM radios, I’ll have to research them.

@nDub was leaning towards something on Amazon but a lot of mixed reviews when it came to signal and distance.

Can’t beat Ham for distance otherwise you’re more or less confined to line of sight. In my experience.

There are online study guides as well. Tests are still being conducted with social distancing in mind. A friend of mine took his test in Stockton four days ago. He got his call sign today. Basically in a a week or two, you could be licensed as well. Go for it buddy!

    Wrecked!
I did the Stockton Ham cram test. probably not going to be one anytime soon as of the covid-19 bullshit. I did not study at all before hand, just went and did their ham cram, took test and past. Honestly its not hard but if you really want to geek out on it there is a lot to learn. I just wanted my cert to be legal. I didn't learn shit. except don't cruse on air, and don't use emergency channels if not a real emergency. If your just looking to get a license to be legal the Ham Crams are the way to go. If you really want to learn do the online stuff and study the test will be easy if you really know the info.

Anyone in Sacramento possibly interested in helping install some 5100s this weekend? I’m capable enough to tackle myself but could probably cut the time in half with some help...

Id be there if this shit wasn’t going around. I hate this stay at home, but we have a household of ‘at-risk’. Can’t take any chances.
If you for some reason push it back and do it later hit me up!
